Here is an example of a (really good) pop song which benefits from the employment of a jazz drummer, in this case Peter Erskine which is probably best known from his days with Weather Report.

Happy 78th Birthday to Tina Turner, who was born Annie Mae Bullock on this day in Nutbush, Tennessee in 1939...

Here is her memorable scene in Tommy as The Acid Queen...

So this month I have been to see the following live:

    Jane Weaver
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
    Airbourne
    The Answer
Mr Big (oh dear oh dear oh dear)
    The War On Drugs
    The LaFontaines
    Queens Of The Stone Age

Living in Glasgow does have its perks although the Mrs is beginning to start muttering about shared parental responsibilities or some such.....

I had no idea that Tina Turner was that old. Someone I once worked with installed stages at pop festivals and he made a comment as to the fact that she was the most unpretentious and pleasant of all the artists he had encountered.

I wonder if anyone has ever heard Tina Turner in a jazz context ? I was really staggered when I first heard this album Herbie Hancock is probably my favourite pianist and I love Wayne Shorter's music too. It was fascinating to hear the interpretation of a Joni Mitchell; tune which adds Tina Turner on vocals. The result could have been merely interesting but I was left with the impression that she should have seriously considered a career in jazz. She is nothing short of sensational on this track. The timbre of her voice is pitch purpose in this context. A great loss to jazz, in my opinion:- Apologies if anyone has heard this before but I think it is a gem.

Tina Turner did a great interview on Jonathan Ross a few weeks bag. No doubt it's still on iPlayer somewhere.

I've heard several live tributes to Tom Petty recently and it reminded me of this piece of guitar based dynamite. Once just a tribute to George but now to Tom and Prince too. Gutted I never caught either of them live especially after seeing Prince absolutely own this solo.

Happy 88th Birthday to a giant in the history of Soul music founder of what we know in the UK as Tamla Motown whose legacy we are all aware of, Berry Gordy III who was born on this day in Detroit (where else?!) in 1929...

This was the first hit that he co-wrote in 1957 and with the royalties from it he set up Motown...

So on a rather on the spur of the moment expensive decision, I bought tickets for me and the ball and chain to see Steps and the Venga Boys. Wooop

The Venga Bus is coming and everybody's jumping...

It'll be my first concert since Blur in 2012, though me being the overly worrying person that I am, I'm slightly apprehensive about it given... past events.
