Interesting bit on OS saying that the new red kit is the fastest selling kit in Saints history. Says they will sell out by February (probably trying to generate a Xmas rush). Found this interesting as those that disliked it (not me) thought it wouldn't sell well.
I kind of liked it but I've gone off it. Hope we go back to proper stripes next season, that's what Southampton play in after all. I am surprised by the sales figures though.
I wasn't a fan of it when it came out, very much a "What the-...*rambling sweariness*" response when I saw it, it's grown on me to the point where I can find it aesthetically pleasing and get on with it, but I'd still be much happier with us in good old classic red and white stripes. If they just put a little Premier League spin on it, I'm sure they would have sold just as many if not more.
Although I love stripes because they are always associated with Saints...I have always found them a bit vulgar (like a deckchair). I think the mainly red kit is classier, whilst still giving a little nod to tradition with the pinstripes.
As far as I understood it was that we plan to alternate a season in stripes with a season out of it. I suppose we'll see. I like the new shirts and have purchased the home one. Still, I hope we go back to stripes next season.
I really don't think much of the new kit, and actually blame it for our poor start to the season. But, not for the first time, I appear to be very much in the minority. I was staggered to read that it had sold so well. Good job I'm not a retailer.
That's utterly bananas. I don't mind the new kit but if that's genuinely their plan, to totally overhaul the kit every season, then I would find it extremely cynical and undesirable. I'm sure the people in charge know more about brand-building than to change its most recognisable asset every year.
Personally I think the best way would be just go red and white stripes most years with little changes and spins on it to try and keep it fresh while staying true to the club's image, then maybe every now and then throw the odd new one in there like the 125 year anniversary kit which I quite liked. Wouldn't be surprised though with the club being streamlined into a formidable business as well as a formidable footballing unit (when we play against teams like QPR, anyway), if there were frequent kit changes to spur sales. I wouldn't like it, but I'd live with it. Hopefully Nicola and the other bigwigs understand that whilst we appreciate the club being run in a manner to keep it financially healthy and stable, we also care greatly for our team's history and identity and whilst certain changes can be made for the good of the club, we still want this to be Southampton F.C., not Southampton Newco 2012. And even if we completely change the face of the club and propel it to new heights as one of England's best, that won't make the grimy old days at the Dell fighting for our lives any less enjoyable or any worse by comparison to European nights at 50,000 seater St. Mary's. Of course changing the kits doesn't completely besmirch the history of the club but just as a whole, I hope our business-orientated leaders understand the importance of a simple red and white striped kit to us. It's not just about the colours!
Wasn't a fan when it came out and actually detest it now!! Wouldn't have minded so much if the pin stripe was more of a solid white, what's the bloody grey bit all about?? As for the sales..promotion to the premership has to be a factor, if this had coincided with our 125yr sash shirt it would of out sold this shirt.
