One thing we've not discussed much in this (long) thread is loan moves away.

Players like Targett, Rowe, Turnbull, Reed etc would all really benefit from some time playing games in league 1 and no doubt there would be some good teams, playing good football interested. I think they have progressed as much as they can playing age grade football.

That would allow us to have a real good look at what we have, what we need and where some of these youngsters are in the summer (I have no doubt that players like Guly, Sharp, Fox and Hoiveld will be moved on in the summer and are we sure these young players are ready?)

JWP, Shaw, Chambers, Gallagher. Not a one of them was loaned out and they all made it to the first team.

Yeah it always seems like the death knell for a young player's career with us if they go on loan. Seems very much "the Southampton way" to keep them around playing age group football rather than (I suppose) picking up bad habits from lower league players.

Strange considering some of our most successful talents were forged in the fires of league one, but that seems to be the philosophy now.

Well you say that, but Barcelona have a B team in the Spanish second division, so their youngsters do get experience playing at a lower (but still professional) level, and several of them have even been on loan (Deulofeu the obvious example).

They were forged at our club though. There must be a great deal of belief that our coaches and our system is best. Plus I guess it strengthens the idea within everyone that there is a direct, clear line to the first team.

Young players we have are monitored way more closely by being kept in house and if you are good, you'll get your chance.

Good idea. Let's buy Pompey. We just have to wait for KL to have a look down the back of the sofa.

Katharina (like her dad before her) believes from watching the new style Saints that football is fun...is she ready for hard core suffering yet?

But they were forged in the fires of League One in the first team or thereabouts. Very few have gone out on loan and come back... Lallana is a notable exception but that was a long long time ago.

Most other clubs tend to follow this same practice - Arsenal loans usually signal an end of their Arsenal career, likewise Chelsea. In fact, only ManU seem to loan players out with a view to getting them in to the first team

But they play under the control of the parent club and in the same style etc so they don't learn bad habits or play with other players that the parent club wouldn't deem good enough

The whole point of the new Premier League Academy leagues is to ensure that developing youngsters play week in week out against decent quality opposition and do not have the very physical long ball game often associated with the lower leagues which is hardly likely to develop them as top class players. most of the Premier Academy teams we play have one or two with first team premier league appearance under their belt. If you look at the last couple of seasons nearly all our loans have been a way of shop windowing players approaching the end of their contract (and no renewal on the table).

Southampton are watching Ajax striker Danny Hoesen with a view to a loan move.
The 23-year-old is under contract with the Eredivisie side until June 2015 but the club have indicated that they would be willing to allow Hoesen to go out on loan to allow the player to gain some playing time as he is currently down the pecking order at De Godenzonen, behind Bojan Krkic and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson.

I'm hearing Osvaldo to Juve on loan with a loan fee paid them €11m at the end of the season. With Vucinic coming on loan for rest of the season. Also another play could be coming in.
