Still think Fonte is more " no club will pay what we want". Van Dijk is obviously a **** off.

I'm pleased for him that he is fit enough.

    http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/14993277.Puel_drops_transfer_hint/?ref=mac

The Echo discussing Puel's statement yesterday that we would only sign someone better than we have. That has always been Saints' position...signings in January will only happen in an emergency or if someone becomes available that we wanted anyway. Buying a player in haste could be an expensive mistake and no one is likely to loan out a good striker. Puel said yesterday that he'd rather try to get the best out of Jay and Shane whilst Austin is out.

I suppose we also have to look at our position....will we be relegated? Very unlikely. Will we make top 4? Just as unlikely. Will we make 5th or 6th? A chance. Is it worth making decisions in haste which may impinge on our plans for summer purchases? I think Saints think longer term than us fans....they want to do well this season, but are just as happy if their plans work out and we do well next season or the season after.

I am worried that anyone else gets injured, so would love a striker with 2 legs as back up. However, unless some kind EPL club lends us an experienced striker, I don't see where we would get one from. A player from the lower league or from abroad being able to fit in will be problematic.

I'm not sure I've much evidence to back this, but I'd like to think that Saints don't approach the January window in the same way others do. With the help of the black box, we can track players long term and if potential risk Summer 17 targets are playing well and may be cherry picked by "bigger" clubs in the summer, we may get in first.

I'd like to think we're in a better situation than when we got the Dutch guy a couple of seasons ago and the other distinctly vanilla footballer at the same time (Djuricic possibly). We all wanted them to do well, but they there were just very average.

I'm encouraged by the rumours about Gabbiadini, would also love there to be rumours about an energetic goalscoring midfielder of at least 6ft 1 who is not physically lightweight.

It's a stupid position in that case. There are only two opportunities to buy & sell players, so to dismiss one of those is professionally, a bit fecking daft, really.

The whole "you don't get value for money in January" thing is a myth. Saints like to put that out there because we are too timid to actively go get players who are under contract.

A further reminder as well.... WE HAVE LOADS OF MONEY! Tons of the stuff. Les Reed actually sleeps on a mattress stuffed with £50 notes. It's a big mattress too. So expensive mistakes are not that expensive anymore. Plus, even with a whole summer to buy players, we still made Redmond our number 1 target. So there's that.

These sort of quotes from Puel, do back up my feeling that he will never push the club to buy players. Which I'm sure will suit Les.

Shouldn't assume that Puel in private is the same as in public....he never speaks with passion so has time to think carefully and mumble away without saying anything. I just think that fans think more short term than the club....whilst they won't have given up on this season (a high position and a cup would do nicely, thank you), it is possible they are already planning for next summer. Going out of the Europa made that even more certain.

I would love us to magic a couple of players out of the ether*, but I can also see the logic behind Saints decision if they don't. The wrong player is an expensive mistake.

*And I haven't totally given up hope of that.

Rashford on loan to the end of the season? Not that I can see the club doing that.

Whilst I agree that we do have plenty of money to make purchases and should be spending it when required, it is certainly the case that January is a more expensive time to buy. Clubs don't want to lose a player mid season as it is disruptive and often harder to replace these players. Therefore they will only sell if the offer is just too good to refuse, which means buying clubs to have to pay a premium in the January transfer window.

Therefore clubs should always aim to conclude all business in summer transfer windows as it leads to better value for money and a less disruptive campaign. However, Saints took the risk of not signing a striker in the summer and now paying the price for that. Even though it is more expensive it is still necessary to bring in a new striker this window.

We need to enter the market for a striker. Whether that be a loan or permanent, well that just depends on who is available. We are going to limp through many games if we do not address this.

    Sebastian Haller?
Has been rumoured in the past but nothing new. Just wondering what people would make of it?
