    When it comes to strikers, or men in general? I've detected a low opinion of the species.

    We have strikers that match these criteria - Messrs Rodriguez and Long, for example. I'd quite like us to sign someone who scores bleeding goals!

    What seems apparent is, the striker we so crave will not come from our Premiership. Does Claude have a beedy eye on someone from his time in France, or is Les a step ahead once again?
    I fail to believe this problem will not be addressed.

    I think there's an unspoken rule in the game, re: financial trickle down. I think Saints aren't permitted the truly huge transfer fees from these players. They go to clubs the level above before going for the serious big money to the teams you mention. It's basically the money hierarchy, designed to keep everyone in their correct place.

    This is...unlikely. All of the (shockingly numerous) conspiracy theories presented on this board about the forces holding Saints back involve some sort of collective action by the biggest clubs, which requires one to consciously ignore the fact that those teams are primarily competing with each other, and would take any advantage they could grab to aid their cause. The unspoken rule would be violated before the week ended, and this cabal would collapse.

    Rather, we don't get the truly huge money because we generally lack leverage. Until recently we didn't sign players to long enough contracts, which meant that we ended up within a couple years of losing them for free in short order. We seem to enter into a lot of "gentleman's agreements" regarding transfers. We perhaps don't fight enough, or try to sell early in the window and take a bit less as a result. Thus, we don't get giant fees.

    When teams on the outside have leverage, they do get giant fees. Everton re-signed John Stones to a long-term deal in 2014, despite the fact that he still had four years remaining on his deal at that point. They spent the summer of 2015 knocking back bid after bid. And in the summer of 2016, they still had three years' worth of his contract as leverage and multiple suitors, and consequently received more than £50m for him.

    OMG Schad. Bugger off with your application of logic. This is the Saints forum. The rules are:

    1. Saints should by now be a top 4 team - we've waited long enough FFS;
    2. that this hasn't happened may be the result of a) poor management b) poor team selection c) the board being crap d) Les Reed having lost his mojo e) conspiracy led by the media and pundits f) conspiracy led by the "big clubs" g) a combination of the above;
    3. meltdown at any time of difficulty is the expected norm;
    4. any fan posting who does not display allegiance to rules 2 and 3 has to be both vilified on the forum and horse whipped during the half time interval at the next convenient home game.
    I know I'm running the risk of rule 4, but good post, Schad.

    Just saw Les Reed in a woodland clearing sacrificing a chicken. A NEW SIGNING IS IMMINENT.

    Or Les is off on one of his spirit journeys again.

    According to a recent report from talkSPORT this afternoon, Southampton are looking to make a move for Ajax midfielder Nemanja Gudelj.

    It’s believed that Saints boss Claude Puel is looking to add more quality to his current crop of midfield options and believes that Gudelj could be a shrewd addition to his side.

    The Serbian has been in good form so far this campaign for Ajax, showing a lot of quality on the ball and creative ability going forward.
    The report claims that Ajax currently rate Gudelj to be worth around the £6 million mark, which is quite the bargain for his ability and a price that is more than plausible for Saints.

    Gudelj could be a good signing for Saints, with the midfield often being rotated this season and many believing that Puel is unsure of his best combination in the middle.

    The 25-year-old is a box-to-box player that could suit Saints’ system to a tee.

    Noah Liebherr (Kat's Son) has just liked a post from a saints fan page stating we are going to put a bid in for Numanja Gudelj of €7m.

    Not sure he is what we need though. Believe it or not he is more defensive minded if anything! Certainly not an attacking player. Just seems like another player similar to Clasie, Romeu, Davis, Höjbjerg and JWP. Good on the ball, retains possession well and helps out defensively (Doesn't apply so much to the latter 3). Seems odd that we would go for him instead of a central attacking midfielder.

    He doesn't seem to say that much as he only has an instagram. He is friends with a lot of current and former saints players too. Just likes the odd post which probably means very little. Worth taking note of though.
