Always wonder that too. Ultimately, though, it wouldn't matter - he wouldn't be here now anyway.

A third brother Leigh played for Winchester up unitl last season and was a very impressive central defender at that level. I believe he was on the books at Spurs and Swindon as a youngster.

So he has no buy-out clause? What an absolute shock that is....
I've said this numerous times yet people still seem to believe rubbish that is circulated in the press. Buy-out clauses are quite similar to swap deals in the sense that they are extremely rare in this country but they make a good story to the papers like to get creative with their lies!

I love the way that rumours grow on forums.
He could have a buy out clause = he has a buy out clause = the Saints board are mad and inadequate to have agreed to one = player wants to leave and there is a queue out the door to buy him.

Doesn't mean there isn't a 'Gentlemens agreement' as Beefy has suggested. I'm sure a lot of people on here give more credence to what Beef says than a lot of what the generall press spout.

In fairness beefy did actually say "technically he does have a buyout clause", which is seemingly untrue.
He also said the club value him at £40m and he will go when that is met, but I think we would sell for nothing less than £50m - just my own opinion. Time will tell.

I'm with you on not just being happy to let him go at £40m. There's a lot of big spending teams after a good CB, and at the moment, he's the best in PL. We have leverage with the long contract, it just all depends how much of a fuss he kicks up. This is all supposition really, I expect him to leave in the summer because that's par for the course for us, but it may not happen.

It will be either this summer of next. Will most likely be decided by a few other factors such as what happens with Fonte, what replacements are available, how badly VVD wants to move and the big kne of what sort of offers we actually get and from whom!

We have tended to sell when they have 2 years remaining so at least keeping him til next summer wouldn't surprise me. That's what I'd do if I were Les.

There is no buy-out, gentleman's agreement or whatever you want to call it in the case of Virgil.

He signed a new deal because he got offered a big pay rise and he is enjoying his life. It's that simple.
