There's not a lot of things that can save United's season, and signing Jose Fonte is about as far from being one of those as anything.

This is pure agent favour if it happens - bump up his pay and profile to prolong his career somewhere in Portugal from next year.

 

If it's true that a pay rise and a years contract extension would have kept Jose happy at Saints, then yeah, we probably should have offered him that. In fact I find it hard to believe we wouldn't have offered him that as a reward for his services.

No I did not. I meant exactly what I said.

 

We'll you're right that we don't know all the gory details, no (though there's a fair amount there to go on). What we DO know, is that our captain has gone running to the press about his oh-so-difficult (bless) contract argument two days before the club's most important game of the season to date.

By anyone's reckoning, that's pretty knobbish behaviour, regardless of the situation. I love the guy and what he's done for us, but that is poor.

 

It is entirely possible that he gave a press interview, but it is also possible that he was asked a question in passing following Puel's comment about a contract. A lot of what is written is padding using a rehash of what we know or think we know. His comments seem to be limited to a denial there is a contract on the table as he refused the one on offer in the summer and disappointment that he isn't playing in every game (perfectly understandable). Obviously all is not butterflies and flowers in Fonte's head, but I doubt that he went out to be disruptive just before an important game that he wants to play in.

 

Schneiderlin and delay not even making Europa league squads any more for United. We probably won't, but would love to bring Morgan home.

 

I'm totally open minded on the Jose issue now, if he decides moves on to a big club then he will go with my best wishes as he earned the right to choose where he wants to end his career, he will be forever a Saints legend like Rickie. I have total faith in Maya to step into Jose's shoes even if we do not sign a replacement.
In a perfect world I want Jose to finish his playing days here and join the coaching staff, but I can understand him wanting a shot at a major club before he retires.

 

His service to Saints means he deserves a bit of leeway....mustn't erase all those great moments for one melt down.

 

Fair point Fran. It's just a little disappointing, the 'how' rather than the why.

Cascarino on Fonte, really surprised at the situation as he is only 32yo and is in his last year of his contract. You would think a team like Southampton would want to keep him by offering his a new extended contract. Really? Love the way these "experts" give their opinions with no knowledge of the actual situation but not surprised

To be fair, this forum exists to give most of us the opportunity to post complete bollocks. With a very few exceptions, none of us actually know anything!

 

I'm not calling him a twat etc yet... I am saying I'm disappointed yet another player chooses to spill all to the press. For the people saying "The quotes could be padded" etc etc, if you look at the article, it mirrors his Insta post a hell off a lot.

Should the club have offered him a extension as well as a big pay rise? Now that is were people will differ, I believe that given his age you have to be careful. I am all for the club looking at giving him a extension at the end of the season if he is still looking decent.

The most annoying thing is Fonte's play on words he says he hasn't been offered a new contract when he clesrly has. He even admitted himself in a article in the Echo he had a right to turn down a payrise a while back. Then he comes out yesterday saying he hasn't had a contract from Saints.

 

Which is what you are doing right now. Your opinion is different then others, that is all.

 

It seems that Fonte probably doesn't consider a pay rise offer as being a new contract. Question of semantics? He says on Instagram that Southampton have informed him that there isn't a contract...does that mean we have withdrawn a previous offer? This is why it is best to keep it in house as none of us know fully what is being talked about.

On the other hand, life would be boring on here unless we could speculate.

 

No he rejected the contract that would have given him nearly 100k with incentives. It is still on the table and hasn't been pulled.

What people trying to defend Fonte need to see is, back in August when all the leaks were saying Utd were in for him and he was leaving he said nothing.He had thousands of fans asking and pleading him not to go, but he said nothing. Yet as soon as he/his agent is unhappy he goes to the press. I can see why people are annoyed.

 

And even when we do, what does it actually matter.?
