It is easy to corrupt a message, yours could be read as that you didn't think it was wrong for players to be talking to the Press but you actually meant the opposite, right?.

Said earlier and I'll say again. Club should have sorted this in the summer so that we didn't get this inevitable sh*t storm prior to the January transfer window. Quite frustrating, especially considering the timing.

I did and as I said it could be interpreted as meaning different things. He is Contracted until 2018 why would they need to offer him another, by then he would probably be past his prime? Obviously if someone comes in with a better offer, he is perfectly within his right to take it, no guarantee he would be better off, or whether it would be a big mistake, but money does talk, even to the most loyal of people. If the Club decide he is worth keeping, then no doubt they will make him a better offer should the need arise.

Just sort it, just give him what he wanted? Five year deal, key to the city. There's a little more to it than that. And also, he was probably pissing them off as much as us with his flirting with Utd at the time.
    Just sort it indeed.

We have offered him a pay rise, that is a contract. He was the one who chose not to sign it, no one else.He is making the club look like don't want him, which is wrong.

He seems to say that he hasn't been offered a pay rise at all? I thought it had been offered, but the Press may have made that up? I am currently losing the plot.

He has been. But for some reason Fonte doesn't call a pay rise a new contract, even though it is.

I inferred that he would be happy to sign but wants an extension too.

Or just a pay rise and a years extension. That doesnt seem like too much hassle to avoid the situation we are now in. Rewarding our club captain for years of service but more importantly - we could have avoided the situation we are now in! So yeah, it should have been sorted before the season started rather than letting it distract us before the biggest game of our season.

I guess the only way we will know for sure, is if the Board make a statement one way or the other, but they tend not to tell us mere mortals anything that doesn't concern us! Puel says it is Private. Whatever, the whole issue may well disrupt the dressing room yet again and we don't need that again.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you. This guy is the journey, he's seen the whole transition. You'd think we'd be lining him up with a testimonial and a job after he finishes playing.
I'm now starting to wonder why they don't seem to want to.

I hope it's that, but with players in the past I am leaning to he wants out.

I think he wants out. Doesn't mean we have to sell in January, and I do believe he is enough of a pro to knuckle down when he knows that, but in the meantime he could do with shutting up and asking his agent to wind his neck in. Is that too much to ask?

Should all be private.putting a post like that on instagram is only fanning the flames imo.
Bit of a sad state of affairs that a club legend is coming out in puplic like that. Think the they need to sort this out either way as its a bit silly now

Certainly not helping, as some will find fault in it whatever it says.

Sorry I'll rephrase, I meant that's what I think it was... maybe past that point now.

    Both quotes from Fonte:

    On Insta today:
“There’s no contract on the table,” said Fonte. “It is what it is, there’s nothing on the table that I didn’t sign. There was nothing there, to be honest. There was in the summer, they offered me a pay rise. They didn’t offer me a new contract."

In the Echo a while back:
“They offered me a pay rise which I’m entitled to discuss with my agent and entitled to say no to as well. I’m entitled to have my own opinion, so apart from that that’s it.”

I think that's hugely presumptious to be honest.

I'll be giving the guy the benefit of the doubt. One of the 3 big legends of the past decade for us so deserves that imo.
