Ultimately, the sum total of our January transfer window is to have (hopefully) solved one problem position, only to create a different one it it's place. On that basis, for me it has been a disappointing window.

As I've said all along, I don't give a monkies that Fonte has gone. But I very much care that we have not replaced him. Even if Virgil was fit at the moment, I'd have been very disappointed with us not replacing Fonte.

We might still get a top 10 finish, if Virgil recovers quickly and our attack kicks into gear (by all accounts Boufal was superb for 40 mins vs Swansea, we have Gabbiadini now, and Long is finally scoring again), but I can't see it being a top 8 finish. A 14th place finish is more likely than an 8th place finish, in my view.

Thank god for the League Cup final, otherwise I'd be looking at things fairly bleakly right now. Instead, it could still be one very memorable and historical season. Bring it on, Utd.

 

Whether it is or isn't true, the fact he used the word 'internets' means I struggled to take anything he said seriously.

Selling your starting cb(Fonte) and not replacing him, then losing your second starting cb to unjury, and still not bringing anyone in....it's got to be said loudly and clearly- this is one ludicrous move by the board.

 

Things go really bad could be one of the premierships worst cases of bad management. We are going to have to get our shooting boats on pronto as I can't see too many clean sheets on the horizon.

 

Agree we should've signed a centre-back, but do you honestly think we've done this on purpose?

We had CB deals lined up, they didn't come through for whatever reason.

No, I don't think it was done on purpose, but that doesn't resolve them of the blame. Given the situation and also the fact that we're about to play arguably the most important match in the last ten years or so, it was absolutely crucial to bring another center back.

 

This. Them 'baulking at the price' of a couple of our targets - we are in Wembley and just sold Fonte for loads FFS.

Oh well at least it's never dull supporting Saints

They wouldn't give Sakho 100k a week. It's not as if Fonte played for free, he was probably around 70k, so our wage increase would only be 30k, not 100k.

 

Any goalkeepers knocking about on a free we could take to get some more strength in depth in that area ?

We were in with a sniff, but I think the wages were prohibitive.

 

I would have had a very hard time saying no to Schar for 5 mil more. It's tough but Virgil injured they were right to put the price up because we were desperate. We are desperately short now at CB. Doubt that is exactly how it went but sounds about right. That 5 mill could have been recouped in league position alone.

 

The extra 5mil is a lie.
