And there would only be one or 2 kids with Adidas or Nike or Puma. Parents didn't spend that kind of money when I was at school. Everybody had Reebok, Patrick or Gola. I always loved Patrick because of the Saints connection. And I never in my life saw a pair of football boots that weren't black until one player appeared in the Prem in some white ones. Can't remember who it was. Everybody wore Bertrand black boots back then.

i remember my patrick boots fondly, more like rugby boots and made with kangeroo skin for extra jump. if a kid dared to wear coloured boots he was sure to get a kicking. i remember one home game which was delayed as we had to get the farmers cows off the pitch first, mid winter and i slid through a cow pat which was frozen on the outside but soft in the middle, it looked like i had put the spurs home shirt on back to front

You must be younger than me (I am 41 by the way.) When I was a young 'un rugby boots were above the ankle and football boots were below the ankle. I think it was very late eighties that rugby players started to wear football style below the ankle ones. No-one got a kicking for wearing coloured boots when I was at school. I think the first time I saw any strange colour other than black boot white or yellow or neon logo was when a mate got a pair of Ryan Giggs Reeboks that were still black but the reebok brand was massive and in a purple.

Trying to remember who I first saw wear non white boots. Who was it? Was it Beckham's white predators or Henry's blue boots?

In answer to the Bucky Ball enquiry in an earlier post, a Bucky Ball is a form of carbon that was discovered in the 1980's called Carbon 60. In modern organic chemistry, a single molecule of carbon 60 looks identical to a football made of panels of pentagons and hexagons. Coincidentally, this framework of construction was made famous by an American architect called Buckminster Fuller [yes, that was his name]. Carbon 60 was named a Buckminsterfullerene, or a Bucky Ball for short.

no junior, i am 45 , was thinking more like the boots of today, big heavy but solid, no like the slippers worn today. i have really broad feet and patrick were basically the only brand i could wear (was waiting for Clarks to start a range ), until i was introduced to NB

Ahh. I remember the old ankle rugby boots but in football terms I am not really that familiar with modern boots other than what my boys get......cheap Patrick or Sondico from Sports Direct :)

I played football to about the age of 15 and from there gave up sport and watched it instead preferring pool darts and snooker. I had a pair of Golas that I remember hurt to kick in. I think they were soft fake leather and I had some nice thick Patrick's which were great. I wasn't the best footballer though. Tried hard but more of a knocker abouter. I was good at one man Wembley in school shoes.
 
The Italia '90 mini footballs were better than sliced bread.

(btw - the one in the picture is not mine. Apparentally these damn things are collector's items and can sell for big bucks. If only I'd known, I must have kicked several dozen onto various rooves of buildings or into my grumpy neighbour's garden)

I like the experience aspect it will give to academy players and if say we drew Pompey then it would add interest to the poorly attended opening rounds, but potentially robbing sides of a trip to Wembley is not something I can get behind.

Still this is just an experiment and a lot of people believe the academy sides won't be on a par with league teams anyway. We shall see
