A very good article. Always liked James Beattie...though his behaviour wouldn't be saintly enough for the present side Interesting that we had little problem with people moving to 'bigger' sides then...I think we no longer see ourselves as a small club and therefore cannot understand why people would want to leave us, so we feel insulted. Mind you, he probably never promised to play for us forever. He points out that Saints have always believed the Academy was the way forward for us. Now things have calmed down, it is time to recognise that Lowe also recognised this and did what he could under more stringent money constraints than we have now. I think he is doing the right thing accepting help from contacts and see how they do things at different clubs and countries. This is what Nigel did...tried to learn from as many sources as possible. Good luck to him.
Not really. I think what you forget is that Lowe tries [to this day] to take full credit for the Youth policy at Saints. The club had the same/similar setup at least as far back as the 1950's. Lowe called it an Academy, in line with other football clubs who were doing the same, and made some structural changes. Before it had been the Southampton Youth System. If anyone really ramped up the changes it was Lawrie McMenemy, who set up the wide ranging scouting network which continues to this day. However, now it really has changed. Yes, I've always liked Beatts too. He was very polite to me personally, and a couple of relatives who bumped into him were quite impressed with him too. Never gave less than 100%, even during his last season with Saints when he carried played on with a knee injury for half the time. Plus, he played the Pompey banter game brilliantly.
