Agreed we need better players as any area can be improved. However, one area that we did quite well last season was defensively in the middle of the park, but too many times we didn't have enough creativity to breakdown intransigent teams. If spending £12m on one player can improve defensively our midfield by say 20%, but spending £12m can improve our creativity by 60% then what is better? I think the latter!

Does it have to be one or the other?

This is what I was about to say.

I agree that the quotes from the agent don't necessarily tell you anything about Wanyama himself and I'm not at the point of saying I wouldn't want him here. Having said that, even if it's just the agent that's the problem that still counts as baggage in my opinion. Wanyama has been quoted as saying his agent is "like family" to him which suggests the agent isn't going anywhere, and he's already shown he's not shy of trying to engineer a transfer in search of more money.QUOTE]

If he comes, then once he is here the agent doesn't get on the pitch to play.

Of course not, but I'm sure we don't have a bottomless pit that NC can draw on, especially as we have already spent a fairly large sum on a CB. To be honest, I haven't seen Wanyama play but I believe he is a very good defensive midfielder, if he is creative as well then that is great. What I do know is that last season teams that came to play us to win, we normally did well against ie Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea. There were more teams though that came to get a draw and maybe sneak a win. Those teams like QPR, Swansea, Norwich plus others we found very difficult to beat and in fact didn't.

One of the most impressive teams I saw last season both home and away were WBA, for the way they defended and attacked. I thought they were very solid and quick and didn't have many expensive signings in their team (apart from Lukaku). Its nice to be going for the bigger names but shouldn't we be trying to sign another Benteke or Michu, who might just be more realistic, cheaper and less of a waste of time

There's nothing to say that if we do get him and his does well, the agent wont do all he can to engineer another move away.
You have to ask yourself, if the agent of a player you're trying to buy is this greedy, whose to say that if you do manage to get the player, that very same agent isn't going to turn the player's focus towards so called 'bigger clubs' after a year or two.

Sadly, I think there's going to be more and more of this crap the higher that Saints progress. Best players are often like thoroughbred horses - twitchy, highly strung, think they know what they're up to, but don't have an awful lot going on between the ears.

It's June, there's no problems about it being a waste of time at this point (I'm sure we're working on more than one player at once, at that), and if getting a Michu or Benteke was that easy then everybody would do it. However, Benteke cost around £8m himself (more than we paid up front for Lovren) so it's not exactly solving the main issue of price. As for your West Brom example, their main reason for success other than Lukaku, was the Mulumbu-Yacob partnership which was better than the Cork-Schneiderlin partnership. I believe that if Schneiderlin and Wanyama got on the same wavelength (no reason to believe they wouldn't, but you never know) it'd certainly eclipse Mulumbu and Yacob.

and so you then turn a profit, or maybe, just maybe we are a bigger club then or heading towards it.

Could you people maybe be quiet and stop saying it's over when it's clearly not yet over?

It's not that I actually think it's over, but there is no news and his agent is apparently unwilling to budge so seems less likely to me. We need other news to talk about! (And no I don't want to talk about bull***t like gaston is off).

How is it possible to be so irritated by a greedy agent when none of us know 100% that that is the full story? I am irritated by the whole saga.

Agents lie.

Agents lie.

Yes I see your point. So you think the deal could be all but done but they're stalling in the hope that a 'bigger club' might come in? And the fee thing is a bit of a bluff. I think it could be a good think if all is quiet..... signing may be announced in a week or so when we've all given up!
