I don’t see this happening at all. After a season of getting pummelled every weekend a team doesn’t drop down a division and suddenly find form. It’s a big rebuild all over again. Best players out, top earners out, a few loans to bridge the quality gap. Probably a new manager to replace the lost faith.
We scraped promotion last time in the best way but Leeds didn’t. No guarantees.
We scraped promotion, but in any other year we would have been top 2. Also, this time we have a Championship squad so we are ready for next time.

I am so chilled about going down…I am almost (not quite) like Libby in wanting it.

Agreed. My optimism and excitement for the season is practically 0. I've got no interest in the PL, unfortunately. Clubs like us just make up the numbers and are cannon fodder to the bigger clubs.

Compare that to my excitement last year and it's like night & day.

I mean, he’s not had the same journey with Saints that Carvalho has with Liverpool. He was actually an important player for us for 1/2 a season and hasn't been with us as long. But yeah, you could probably say that Alcaraz is a Saints reject at this point as we are all in on RM and he doesn't fit in with RM tactics.
I don't really think it's harsh. I really like Alcaraz as a player regardless. Likewise I think Cavalho could be a good signing for us. Doesn't stop him being a Liverpool reject (or cast-off if that is a less harsh way of putting it) and doesn't stop me being annoyed that being a Liverpool player somehow makes you worth £10m more regardless if you've barely ever featured for them. They make sizeable profit on their rejects for no discernable reason other than because they are Liverpool players and that annoys me, and I will happily admit that it probably annoys me more because I strongly dislike Liverpool anyway.
Anyway, I would be happy if we sign Cavalho, but don't think we should be spending any more than £15m on him really.

Edit: moved over from the O'Riley thread

The reason big clubs can charge more is because they don't need to sell. If Carvalho was playing for a Championship club, we would get him for around 12m, because the money is crucial at that level. Liverpool don't particularly need to sell, so they can charge what they like.

It's annoying, but that's just how it is. Perhaps we shouldn't be trying to buy players from the big clubs.

I definitely don't want us to go down, and I don't think any of us genuinely do.

I think the key thing is I just want it to be exciting. As Saints fans the best we can expect is to be entertained. If we do go down then so be it, that is football. But I at least hope it is close and we put up a good fight so that we get enjoyment out of the odd win or moment when it looks like we are staying up. When we went down last time it was so dull as we just faded into having nothing to play for.

Agree 100%. Last time I didn't even go (or watch on streams) to the last 4 home games as couldn't be bothered (actually I watched the last game on a stream). We were so lack lustre. Last year (and not because of the way we went up - though that was simply excellent) was exciting and we actually played good football. I looked forward to going every week.

Probably lost less players a second time round though.

Have Sheffield United had to sell many?

Come join the dark side :emoticon-0130-devil

If you're not ready yet you will be when the Forest game reminds us just how terrible VAR is :bandit:

Think they've lost 12/13 to transfers, free transfers and free agency. Although that is far more of a symptom of their off-pitch ownership issues. Think their entire first-team squad is 18-20 players at the moment

ok, so if we can equal or break the record for worst premier league season ever we can count on not having to do a major rebuild. A positive to take!

What I mean is very few of our players are proven as PL standard so if we have a really poor season and go down there's no guarantee that our better players will attract loads of interest.

Fair enough. That'll teach me to make assumptions when I don't follow transfer windows <laugh>

Don’t think Burnley have lost too many and they are more relatable to us. They lost their good players when they got relegated, came straight back then went down again.

Waits to be corrected and they’ve lost a dozen players this window

BREAKING: Every club in English football is interested in Celtic's Matt O'Reiley.

You must log in or register to see media

Maybe or is it that Celtic are putting it out there to force action from us?

Not doing anything wrong - we do the same. Remember the Lavia saga last year when Liverpool wouldn't budge on £49,999,999, then we ended up pimping him out for £5m more and Liverpool missed out, even though by then they had bid more than the final price?

Yeah Celtic definitely doing what they can to drum up bids. Interestingly it has coincided with Atalanta going very quiet. It could well be that Atalanta have been priced out and left just us as the only bidder.

Looks like this one is dead if the rumoured Brighton bid (£25m) is true.

It is Alan Nixon reporting though.
