It doesn't seem that long ago that the £35 folded inside a small brown envelope which I received for a week's work at the BAT plant in Shirley seemed like a decent sum.
That's interesting AR, how long ago?. I might know you

Late seventies mate, about 78 or 79 I think. Wasn't there for long though, I just did a few weeks agency work.
Oh ok, just missed you. Worked there for a long time from the early 80's.

They tried to "headhunt" me in 1981 due to my incredible skill in breeding rats.
All of this is true.
I buggered off to do my nurse training instead![]()
How's the rat breeding business? Did you keep it going as a sideline?
Gave it up when I started adopting cats, they don't mix well. Miss them though, vastly misunderstood is your rat. Mine used to have the run of my student room, always returned to it's cage to pee and poo. Apart from chewing some lp covers all my rats were jolly well behaved.
C'mon Martin we're getting bored here!
Quick someone post the 4 Yorkshiremen sketch before another thread descends into old buggers moaning about how tough their life was.
Just to ring the changes ... my generation had, well The Who for a start! We had free University education - in fact the government paid us if our parents couldn't . There were jobs a plenty and strong trade unions making sure we weren't exploited. There were pension schemes that didn't go tits up; endowment mortgages that paid a bonus; affordable housing and a decent health service.
No we didn't do foreign holidays and we didn't have credit cards. We didn't have "stuff" because there wasn't much to have. The current generation of 20+ have student loans; no chance of getting a house; poor job security; crippling debt and then are assaulted to borrow more to buy more stuff. Oh and don't fall off the edge, 'cos you'll be sanctioned and forced to go to a foodbank. Still, this is obviously luxury, lad.
Exactly. My generation (I'm a bit younger than you, so substitute The Clash for The Who) were born in a time of peace and plenty. Opportunities were near enough limitless for those prepared to work for them, and there were always plenty of second chances for people like me who ****ed up a few times. Even the lowest paid jobs offered just about enough to live on, and there was enough social housing or cheap private rentals available to ensure that homelessness was not a realistic threat.
None of those things are true for today's youngsters, and no amount of cheap play stations will make up for what we had and what has been denied to them.
Mind you, when i was a kid there was no central heating and no double glazing - we froze half to death in winter. And the food was pretty crap, never saw a pizza or a curry til I was about 14. Nonetheless, my generation was charmed. Beats me how anyone of my age can fail to appreciate that.
Same, instead I read stuff about tobaccoDamn I got sucked into the thread I thought he'd signed.![]()
I'm in work so will have to sneak a look on my mobile. Hmmm... strangely enough, doesn't do much for me... Graziano obviously still has my heart (and other bitsShocking....I cannot bear to look. Martin puts topless pictures of himself on his Instagram account. Helen, don't look.![]()
Luxury . I dream of freezing half to death in winter . I freeze to death 3 times , work a 27 hour day & Pay BT to let me have a job .
Tell the kids today , and they would never believe me ....
