If he signs, he’ll be a Saints player, so he gets my support. If he proves to be a turkey after a reasonable number of games (bearing in mind it took Mané a whole season to step up to the PL), then I might start to question the wisdom of buying him. Until then, I’m behind him 100%.

Therein lies the problem, though. We kinda need these players to hit the ground running...if it takes him a few months to find his feet, it's likely he'll be finding them in the Championship. He absolutely could come good, I'm just not convinced that a striker whose talents consist largely of being good in the air, with a mediocre-at-best scoring record is what we should have spent the window pursuing.

Disagree that Mane took a whole season to step up, as well; he started the year poorly, but by Christmas he bagged goals in four of five matches, and established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet.

Considering we are buying a striker with the exact same attributes as Austin he is exactly what we need. We've missed Austin massively.

Yes I absolutely agree we need him to hit the ground running, but my point was that we have no choice but to support him from the outset, rather than second-guess the reasons we bought him.

And you’re right about Mané but the point was that even if he starts slowly it doesn’t mean he won’t come good. Whether it’s too late or not won’t just be down to him but to the rest of the squad and Pellegrino, and they all seem up for the fight judging by recent games.

Heh, a lot of the complaints about Pelle proved out, though. He was never the target man who'd hold up the ball and bring wingers into play that people assumed he'd be owing to his size. There aren't a lot of those left, though, even in the 6'3"-and-above category, even if that's what we need (and I'm still unconvinced there).

With Austin out for at least 3 months we needed a replacement. Our goal scoring and overall play improved massively when he was in the team.

Can’t wait for him to bang in a brace on his debut, and shut everyone up straight away. Then go on to score another 6-10 goals and songlehandedly turn our season around.

I've said before that I think he's an average player but the minute he signs for us he'll get my full support.
I also hope he proves me completely wrong and scores an absolute bucket load.

Because he's mostly scoring in matches that are already long past decided. Here are the situations where his league goals have come from over the past two years, with the score:

Against Metz: 72nd minute (5-0); 83rd minute (6-0).
Against Nancy: 87th minute (4-0); 90th minute (6-0).
Against Marseille: 90th minute (4-0).
Against Dijon: 17th minute (1-0).
Against SC Bastia: 79th minute (5-0).
Against Guingamp: 10th minute (1-0); 78th minute (6-0).
Against Troyes: 85th minute (2-2); 88th minute (3-2).

You seem to have put a lot of effort into trying to confirm that he isn't very good. Why not just wait and find out? Wouldn't that be easier, and more informative?

Yeah, spending perhaps three minutes on Transfermarkt at work compiling that, while waiting on hold on the phone, was truly taxing. But such are the sacrifices I am willing to make.

In a single response you have shown how we manage to live in a culture where people work absurdly long hours yet productivity is so low. :emoticon-0105-wink:

Each to their own. I tend to prefer evaluating deals on their (perceived) merits rather than reflexively choosing a side. Some of our transfers looked very good to me. Some of those turned out, some didn't. Some of our transfers looked very bad to me. Some of those turned out, some didn't.

If you want to debate why Carrillo's qualities and goalscoring record make him a good option to lead us back from the brink, have at 'er.

Each to their own. I tend to prefer to evaluate the player when he’s played for Saints. If the club sign him, I immediately will choose his side and give him a chance, rather than reflexively look for the negative. As some of our transfers looked good to me and some looked bad to me, with some working out and some not, I have learned to accept a transfer and wait to see them play for us for a number of games and then make my evaluation.

If you want to debate on Carrilo’s qualities before we have even seen them for Saints (let alone goal scoring record for Saints), have at ‘er :)

Seriously Schad, you’ve gone straight to point out the negatives. All this does is help feed the negativity that is wallowing around this place and probably encourages those who like a moan to be ready when he doesn’t back a brace in the first half of his first game.

The club/manager have decided they want him based on their knowledge of the player. Let’s give him a chance and let’s evaluate what he does with us.

Player can be **** at one club and good at another. People can only judge what they have seen and can't see the future.

Which is why people shouldn’t judge him Beefy until they’ve seen him here... you’ve backed my point entirely. Thanks.

Mane signed in transfer window, so it took him up to Christmas to adjust, or sometime between September and Christmas based on what you’ve said.

We need a player to hit the ground running, but to get that you either need to be lucky or sign the very top players and even them they might not hit the ground running. Yes we want that, but to expect it is frankly ludicrous.

Best keeping your fingers crossed.
