When you have a lot of quality, quality has to sit on the bench and wait to prove themselves. Look at the top 6, their bench could easily be the 7th,8th & 9th in the Prem, such is their depth. I suppose it helps if you're on mega wages though! If we want to be competing with the top boys, it's a system we have to employ.
That's why we have to concentrate on the academy, buy good foreigners and have loanees.

Personally I don't understand a professional who thinks he is too good, or isn't willing, to fight for and keep his place.

After all I would imagine most pro-footballers are egomaniacs full of self-belief (and the ones I have played against and met definitely are) but leaving because you are challenged for your place means you think you should be playing regardless.

I've played with players like that on Sunday mornings, if they are substitute they don't turn up the next week, but professionals?

It makes sense. At Artur's age, why fight for 10-15 appearances when you can go somewhere else and be guaranteed 30+? He's too old to worry about proving a point by winning a positional battle.

I know its old but i think saints must have given him assurances

Worse, if anything.

"Don't you know who I am?" seems to be the prevalent attitude.

This is a bit of a minomer. The player is relying on the opinion of one man and as many fans from many teams have seen, managers often keep playing a favourite even though the fans complain constantly about that player. Pulis at Stoke was berated by fans for continually playing favourites out of position for example.

So Boruc could train brilliantly, outperform his 'challenger' in cup games yet still not be selected in league games. It's similar to normal work where there is always someone that blags his/her way through the day, doesn't (seem) to do much, yet the manager (seems) to think they are the bees knees.

Top clubs only have 'quality' bench warmers because they can offer the chance of success even though playing time is limited plus they pay big wages. Outside of the top 5 there is not one club really that has top quality backup. Even Everton don't have that luxury. I would suggest Spurs and Liverpool (until now) only have reasonable cover too.

So it's only Man U, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal that can field a properly competitive second 11

Thought this might as well be an unofficial match thread for the game tonight. Celtic line up
Celtic
01 Forster
05 van Dijk
21 Mulgrew
23 Lustig
03 Izaguirre
02 Matthews
06 Biton
25 Johansen
42 McGregor
15 Commons
10 Stokes

KO 7:45.....Van Djik has been linked with Swansea & Newcastle. A lot of sources seem to think Forster is nailed on and will arrive this week if Celtic fail to claw back the 3 goal deficit

EDIT: Saganowski is on the bench again for legia

He'll sign even if they do. Celtic won't make it out of the group stage so may as well cash in. Waiting until after this game is just giving them a shot at the prize for making the group stages.

Would love to sign Forster, but won't we be right back where we started if Boruc leaves. Need 2 good keepers, though do understand Boruc's position.

Forster is 8 years younger than Boruc, so even if they are the same quality (I think Fraser is better), it's a good swap. The substitute GK thing is a conundrum but not the most urgent one we have.
