It's just a standard article why are people getting all hyped up about it? He hasn't actually said no either.
For anyone interested we are still talking to him and atm he hasn't said no. Valencia need to sell to survive the season and we are the only club that have made a bid for a player of theirs. The article written is just a standard question and answer piece. Do you really expect Banega to come out saying he is leaving etc while we are still in talks? That would be career suicide if the deal broke down.
I accept that Banega would say he wanted to stay at Valencia if not sure the deal is done, but he would also say it if he just wanted to stay at Valencia.
It wouldn't be a saint x thread without the deal being dead. Benteke handed in a transfer request last week so things change in football. Until he signs a new contract or moved elsewhere you can't really rule it out until the window closes.
Or he could say he wants to stay only to join us with Banega saying he had to leave to save Valencia. So basically making him a god in their fans eyes. As I said the deal isn't dead he hasn't even said no.
I never lost my faith in the Wanyama deal, and was always confident it would happen, but I don't have the same feeling about this one.
With Wanyama and Gaston things looked bleak at times but always felt that their best option was Saints and we could reel them in soon enough, with Banega it could certainly still happen, a footballers word means very little these days, but I'm not sure we have quite as strong a position. Anything could happen though!
Wanyama never looked bleak tbh, we never walked away or called the deal off. It was just a load of crap spewed out by the press and Cortese making Wanyama's agent look a idiot.
Of course, the offer was always on the table it wasn't as if Nic would just storm off in a huff and most knew this, but when the word of the agents demands first surfaced things were fairly bleak as we didn't know how much of an arsehole the agent was going to be. As it turned out, he was certainly an arsehole but he didn't have the spine to match!
I agree. There was never a point where I thought a deal was unlikely, although some people weren't as capable of telling the reliable reports apart from the bullshit ones, so there was some very unnecessary doom-mongering on the thread. There was never a point where Wanyama's agent(s) had any real leverage. With only Cardiff and us in the running, a compromise had to come eventually.
I didn't think that Nicola would storm off, but I thought he might have put the Wanyama offer on the table and said, 'That's it, over to you'. Don't know what to think of the Banega deal, other than to think it unlikely.
I'm lucky that I did, helps to have some one that knows what's going on tho. But yeah I understand your view of how it seemed.
