I don't really see where banega fits into the squad, don't get me wrong he is class, he and Ramirez could be phenomenal together!! But, surely we have a good depth in midfield with lallana, ramirez, punch, cork, guly, Spider-Man, Wanyama, Rodriguez, Davis, prowse.

Yes but add Banega to that and you've got an even better depth in midfield. ;)

It'll be a bit harsh to some of the guys further down in the pecking order, but this is the nature of progression.

Well, they're all different positions. Filter it out more, considering we play 4-2-3-1...

Deep CMs (the two): Schneiderlin, Wanyama, Cork and occasionally Davis and JWP.
Wide players: Lallana, Guly, Rodriguez, Punch, potentially Ramirez.
Advanced midfielders (middle of the three): Ramirez, Davis, theoretically Lallana.

Banega would fit predominantly into the advanced midfielder position (though can cover at DM), putting Ramirez out wide (which he can do). It would look like this:

    Schneiderlin - Wanyama
    Ramirez - Banega - Lallana/Rodriguez

Why do some fans say that they don't see where a quality player fits in to our team because we already have numbers there? Do people just not understand progression?

Buying players like that will just give us ideas above our station.

Progression is key to getting where cortese and us fans want us to be, but to ask a question on a players ability to slot into a midfield already full of talent when we should be doing this in other areas is a perfectly acceptable question. No?

No... Turning down the potential signing of Banega would be ludicrous. Centre midfield may not be our most obvious weak position but the guy is world class!

Ok, firstly you didn't mention anything about other areas of the team, your post asked why bring him in or where would he fit to an area where we already have options. To me it's simple: Pochettino sees something we haven't already got at his level and it will be an improvement on some in that area, hence improvement. If the original post had said, I would rather we spent that money on an X, fair enough, but it didnt, it asked where he would fit in.

Not having a dig, just pointing out that improvement is always good. Why did United and City both want van Persie this time last year with their front lines? Improvement.

I see your point but the best players will take the starting 11 slots. More quality competition for places means a better starting XI more chance of cup success and more resistance to injury worries. I do get a bit concerned that we're not strengthening in other areas ie striker and winger but the battle is won and lost in airfield. Poch knows what he's doing and Banega sounds like a too good opportunity to miss.

Was so cuffed when my wolves supporting mate said "can't believe you got wanyama, he's amazing". Its really happening...... "our time is now!".

He's not world class. If he were world class he wouldn't be signing with us for a reported 8 million. He has the POTENTIAL to be world class.

Surely if Banega played last night he can't be in serious discussions with anyone. No club would take that risk. Either not happening or a long way from happening, surely.
