Timing of our improved offer is a bit weird considering the bid for Azaz as well. Feels unlikely we get both even if Fernandes leaves.

If Smallbone and Aribo both leave then we can probably have 5 central midfielders (Spertsyan, Azaz, Fernandes, Charles, Downes). Fernandes could play deeper, not sure about Azaz or Spertsyan, not too many games you’d think we’d need both Charles and Downes in the starting line up

Makes sense to me. Making contingency plans just in case. It's clear we really want Spertsyan though.

I’m not sure as it sounds like the Azaz one might be quite far along and it’s not usually good form to get an agreement from the player and close with the club and then pull out at the last minute. I guess could always be blamed on the selling club wanting too much of a fee

Does seem odd to spend close to 30m on two players who play in similar positions especially when we are really weak on the wings

Unless the plan is some kind of 5-2-2-1 with wing backs
 
I was going to say. Doesn't seem likely that we would have been like here's our offer....not sure we'll actually be able to give you the money. But if we can this is how much we'll give you. If not...sucks to be you.

I am a little bias in fairness as the Saint Gaston thread is the reason I created my account... to tell everyone to stop getting carried away as it clearly wasn't going to happen.

I really have been wrong since the start!
