United spending all that money on Antony seems to have been the trigger for this. If reports that he was our number one target all window are true then he was probably waiting on an offer from United which now isn’t happening. I think we’re going to (perplexingly) profit from their pointlessly prolific profligacy and ponderousness in perpetuity.
I still don't think we'll get Gakpo, but at least it's made the final couple of days if the window interesting.

Considering our position at the time, I'd say Lambert and Fonte were also star signings.

This is the problem we have leaving things till the last minute. Other clubs will come in and outbid us. Sounds like Newcastle are in for AMN, now Palace for Gakpo. Have a horrible feeling we could end up with no one else, but really hope it’s not the case.

I’m also fully expecting someone like Arsenal, Palace etc will gazump us at the death - but not gonna cry until it happens legitimately!
Weird thing is that 5 or 6 games will have been played before the signings arrive or settle. That’s a lot of possible points earned. And yet teams wait to try and save the odd million. Every place higher you finish is an extra 1.5m or something.
It’s more complicated than that though. Our position means we have to wait on these players. We’re going to be signing the best young players that the top clubs turn down the chance to buy. We have to wait until United have been fed to know that that route isn’t open for Gakpo and we’re a good alternative for him.
You could decide that the window has to close before the first game, but leagues start at different times so it would have to be a European confederation agreement. Nobody else is looking to help out the Premier League!
