Great shot stopper, his performance against Inter on the final game of the season earned lots of praise.

As ever with keepers, it’s the concentration and organizational/commanding skills which sets the best apart.

Would be pleased with this signing
Spiderman 2 Surely?

The thing about having a quality second keeper is you need to be able to play them in the cup matches, which means runs in the Europa League and deep into the domestic cups for us, neither of which we did last season. Surely he’s coming to be second choice.

But I can't imagine we would pay that much or that he would come here after the season he just had to be second choice.

At a minimum I think he is our GK of the future, and will be competing for the job from day 1. He could be the starter next season or it could be game 1 of this season. But I think he will have been assured the job is his as soon as he is ready.

But Gunn is 23 and cost us £13m last season, so my impression is that was his role

Of two minds. On one hand, opportunistically picking up highly-regarded young talents regardless of need is a good idea. On the other, I'll have to wait and see how much we have to spend before being sure it was the best idea at this particular moment in time.

Maybe Ralph wants a two good keepers. Gunn is very young and so having a choice of two is fine.

Alex likely to go if we sign this lad and FF hadn’t been involved for 18 months.

We already have 2 good keepers. Gunn and McCarthy have both proven to be PL quality.

Question is, could we sell McCarthy for more than the new lad costs. If so then it would be good business, lets hope we dont end up with 4 keepers on pretty high wages mind.

It isn't just £10m though. He will be on min. £40k a week for the next 4 years, most likely long after Ralph has left us. Say we can't move Forster and McCarthy on, that is clearly a risk.
We have one of the lowest wages per year in the Prem. Think I read it as around 15th? Wages aren't the problem as long as we stay up.

Our wage bill as a total isnt the issue, but when you look at the money we spend on players that add nothing/little, it certainly is a problem. Hence why Ralph wants to spend the same as we do now but on fewer senior players.

Ralph wants a total overhaul of players. He wants to basically get rid of most the players in the team atm. There is about 11 players he doesn't want and he wants to bring in 6 or 7.

Like I said before, only reason he is here is because he has been told he will get backed big and be the guy that changes Saints back to a top 10 team. He will be gone if we don't do like we said.

Total wage bill in 2017/18 was 10th in the PL.

Wage-to-turnover was 5th-highest:

That was before getting rid of Hoedt etc. They are nearly all going to go for a loss. Saints are very much rebuilding

Oh, I totally agree with this approach. I've been advocating a scorched-earth summer for a good two years now. But our wage bill had gotten genuinely bloated, which was alarming given how few legitimately good players we had.
