(i think) I am confident however the 12k would come from young people all round the ground who would love a kop ticket and from waiting list. you are right.. you can end up nobeing able to see. you can be 5'10" and not see very well just as easy.
The mass of people being directed into that pen would have backed up and up in the tunnel as there simply wouldn't have been space to cram more and more in had it been a seated area. Opening the gates let too many in in one go but it was into a standing area where there was nothing to stop them letting even more in. Had it been a seated area, there wouldn't have been the space for more to be let into and those already seated wouldn't have got crushed. The incompetence was to blame - the open terraces allowed it to happen.
But thats the point. Open terraces won't exist. There will be a set number of tickets and those tickets will have a set location to stand. When I went to a Dortmund game it was exactly the same as normal game, but I just stood there instead.
I've still got a pair from the 70's with a 'Keep On Truckin'' patch on them. Haven't been able to get in them for 20 years though.

Sorry if we've been at cross purposes. I know a re-introduction of standing will be completely different. It will be ticketed etc. etc. I'm not actually arguing against it. The point I was arguing against was the 'standing had nothing to do with the disaster' viewpoint some have put forward, when in my view it played it's part because it was easy then to let lots of people into standing pens and guess when it was thought to have reached it's capacity, rather than [if there were seats] just to let in seat ticket holders.
Actually standing wasn't the issue though. The management (or distinct lack of) of that standing contributed.

You're right standing wasn't the issue but - and I'm only banging on about it in reference to what one of the Mum's said about losing her son on the day - had he been seated, he wouldn't have died of compression asphyxia. You can argue in favour of standing [and I'm not for or against it as I said earlier] but you can't argue against what she said was the reason for losing her son. You simply can't - and that's the only point I was making.
He wouldn't have died had it been remotely managed either. The fact people were left to go wherever they liked contributed.

as i said that's well and good until you realise you have no room to actually fit that in Anfield and get an extra row of people in the space of one row of seats. it can be said all they want but you need more than 12 inches to stand on for 90mins.
I agree. The two things together were a recipe for disaster. Overcrowding has never happened in an all seater stadium in English football.
Something to remember, even though there is a requirement for the two top leagues to have all seater stadia, it isn't against the law to stand to watch the game.
