It depends on how much we value Keith palmers life then? My daughters at uni and hopeful of joining the police and I'd want her to be able to shoot back at someone shooting! You can't compare previous years! It's the here and now and a different world! And the scum aren't gonna lay arms down like the IRA did!

Despite the tragic outcome, the events yesterday were a success for the security and emergency services.

I think it should be considered for central London.

If you arm the police, you massively increase the likelihood of the criminals also arming themselves and significantly increasing the risk to the police.

And it's the day to day criminals you've got to worry about, not an isolated, once in a blue moon, terror attack.

Which is precisely why 82% of police officers voted against the idea of arming of the entire force.

And I'll take a coppers opinion on this over a greengrocers.

I think we expect too much of the Police.

They should be there for day to day community work and crime investigation. Crowd control and the use of weapons should be left to the experts in the armed forces.

Part of the problem is that the Police rely on public co-operation to solve crime. The TV detectives are a bit of a myth. If we paramilitarise the Police force, it makes them more remote from the community, and brings them into political situations, none of which helps in community cohesion or crime reduction/solving and is a massive drain on resources.

My point was, that if your daughter wants to be a copper, you should perhaps pay more attention to those who are the experts in this area.

They already are. There's armed police at the Houses of Parliament, Downing Street, even randomly walking around central London. They're also at all major airports and ports, along with places like nuclear power stations.

I would take the opinion of someone who knows when to use an apostrophe, but there you go.

So all the countries who arm their police, and there are only 5 who don't, are wrong and you would feel safer visiting there if they didn't arm their police?

We were talking about policing in Britain, what other countries do is up to them, but as I believe we have the best police force in the world, I certainly wouldn't swap with any of them.
