to be clear, I don’t want Johnson. My point was that I don’t just want an appointment that is “oh wow look at how rich we are now”.

People need to not get carried away with the fact he’s a billionaire. Pompey’s owner is filthy rich and they’ve done very little with it.

I don’t think so personally, no. But it’s not about impressing. It’s about the right choice, whether they’re a “wow” name or not

would they have a choice if it was paid back?

they played a game (quite rightly) and it didn’t pay off. Which is gutting. But they’ll have known this might happen.

FPP were asked to renegotiate the repayment terms and politely declined. Sounds like someone has gone for the early repayment option, which of course comes with penalty clauses $$$. Regardless of that financial sting in the tail, little don will be a relieved man as FPP absolutely had his pants down over the terms of the loan.

I do agree with the frustration. That being said I'm not really sure who we could appoint. We've tried for a fairly big "name" in Poyet. Once that falls through its a case of how many people would drop to this level. I don't get the impression that KLD will be an abramovich type (if he was even able to with the wage cap and the likes) so I doubt they'll throw huge money at a manager.

It's a big risk for anyone to drop to this level. They might buy into the project, but if it were to fail they've got a major league one failure on their CV. Attracting someone who we'd all think is good won't be easy at all. In some ways the best we can hope for is an unknown foreign coach who might be class, but that's no guarantee either, plenty will come here and fail. I'm fully expecting to be underwhelmed but ultimately we need to give it time and see how things progress regardless of who the manager is.

I'd rather we appointed someone who was keen and up for it than a big name who was here for a big pay day.

Whilst CM was full of ****, and the “piss take party” hadn’t stopped when they took over, just shifted to them, he was right about how managers, players and agents saw Sunderland as a place to get easy money.

we need to absolutely fight against anyone thinking that again, which there’s a very high risk of happening if the new owner starts splashing out on big names that are clearly just in league one for the money.

The growth needs to be sustainable, considered and confident. The money should give us the edge in negotiations for the right players / staff - not attract otherwise completely unattainable ones. Otherwise it will be fun for a while but end in tears.

And to make myself clear I don’t want another failure, I’d rather have the hipster brothers, at least they have achieved something.
And I don’t really want them..

It does matter though, because if the takeover had been signed off, there is absolutely zero reason why it wouldn't be announced.

Doubt there's ever been a football manager who hasn't failed at some level. Sometimes, the same as teams and players, they are just the right fit and at the right time. That could be the case this time, who knows. Not a fan of Johnson or Cowley's and would like a bigger name but our recent past should tell you it doesn't always work.

I’m 43 and will still be playing when I’m a pensioner. We’ve grown up with games and seen how they have evolved, why give up now when they are even better in some ways!

Gus is Gus though. He'd have a temper tantrum somewhere down the line. Not saying he's not the best candidate but he's certainly not a long term appointment. Mind you, there's a chance none of them are!
