Watford are in the Championship, so were relegated last season... But the Cowley's did manage to keep Huddersfield up. I said on here yesterday that Pearson with SKP is my choice but I'm not ruling the Cowley's out after reading what has been posted on here and elsewhere. Every manager has to start somewhere and someone has to take that chance on them and see where it takes them. If Cowley does get the job, my hope is that in 5 years time he's poached by Man City because that means he's succeeded massively with Sunderland.
Tbf we had all the obligatory articles and videos of how good Ross was, that didn't turn out too well.
People need to stop having this stance whereby everything needs to be either black or white, I don't think it makes people bedwetters because they don't believe Cowley is the right man for the job mind. Lets be honest here, Appointing Cowley isn't really a statement of intent is it? We are supposedly on the cusp of a billionaire takeover and it looks like the manager we are going to get is one that lives across the road from the current CEO. It doesn't really inspire me that it's the right decision nor one that has been planned properly considering we offered a different manager a contract to sign yesterday. I feel like we have gone down this route before of appointing managers in the mould of Grayson, Ross, Parkinson etc and we need something different that the fans can get behind. All of the 'successful' managers we have had, have came with a bit of an aura about them, abit of arrogance and credibility. The manager is the fundamental ingredient that drives a club forward. It wouldn't be right to write Cowley off provided he gets the job, but i think fans are allowed to be sceptical. A CV of Braintree, Concord Rangers, Lincoln and 10 months at Huddersfield, doesn't necessarily indicate to me that he should be the stand out candidate. That's not bed wetting, just how i see it.
The only time I have ever bet on football was when a mate from the dark side decided to put £200 of his redundancy money on Sunderland winning the league as he was convinced it was a dead cert, so I put £40 on. The manager was Lawrie Mac and we ended up getting relegated to division 3 for the first time. After that I decided not to bother anymore.
Mostly, I think, because of the structure he was working within and the fact that these ****wit owners made things so difficult for him.
Aye, feel a bit daft now tbh. It didn't really feel like gambling at the time because I trust those who were getting info (especially ones I know irl) and it sounded a done deal. I'm normally very risk averse but thought it was worth it. Luckily I only lost £100 which I can afford to lose (I've been doing matched betting for a while, so I've won a fair bit more than that so I can kind of pass out off as not being my money!). Can't be helped like, but it's definitely the last time I'll do it even if people are saying it's done and the length of contract and everything! Or if I did do it again I'd only do it if they knew it was someone at 10/1 or something so I could only risk a tenner and get a decent return! Worst thing is that our manager odds aren't on any of the betting exchanges. Normally you can lay bets on those, so if I'm standing to lose £100 on poyet, I could offset some of that by offering odds for it not to be Poyet and at least lower my losses to maybe £50 or something. Searched all the exchanges but can't find any where I can do it. I think betfair exchange has the derby manager odds on there and you could lay choices there but we must be too far down the leagues, another hassle about being ****! Oh well, I'll chalk it down as a life experience, just hope some haven't lost more than they can afford to
I agree. I was fully behind Ross for the most part. If it's Cowleys I'll be behind them too. Not totally convinced from the outset mind and hope they prove me wrong if they get the job.
Too bloody right! It's really dampened my enthusiasm about this whole "takeover" thing, if indeed that's what it is. A bargain-basement, fairly inexperienced lower league manager untested at a club the size of SAFC, working under a DoF/Sporting Director doesn't quite sit right with me. Would the money not perhaps be better spent on a better quality manager - assuming we could attract one?
I’ll give the new manager a fair crack whoever it is and I also wasn’t overly concerned with Donald and Methyn retaining minor interests in the club. However ,after the way they’ve allowed Cookie to be treated they really need to **** right off.
Tbf I’m not being black and white and I think most people genuinely do have a balanced view on this regarding the appointment and Cowley. But the poster I was replying to was being black and white in being completely and totally against Cowley regardless of any context. Maybe not bed wetting from him but more just naivety and arrogance. Also it’s important to remember that you can have the richest owners you want but it doesn’t mean you can attract any manager you like. Having a new, ambitious billionaire owner isn’t the key to a high profile manager. League One just isn’t a lucrative pull for big name managers. I’m sure Portsmouth have billionaire owners and they’ve been stuck with Kenny Jackett for years.
See, I think the argument you're making should be completely tipped on its head. Our new owner is someone who has studied football in depth, so will know the minutiae and will understand what makes a good manager. I think Cowleys CV is exactly what makes him the stand out candidate. Look at where those clubs were when he picked them up and look at where he left them. Even at Huddersfield he had a job to do and achieved it. None of the 'successful' managers we've had had done anything much before. Yet they came here and it worked out. There are similarities to Ross in career trajectory but Cowley is the polar opposite of Grayson and Parkinson in those terms.
I just hope it is the new people making the decision and not Rodwell and his current mob, just seems convenient out of all the managers out there, it looks like we are opting for the one the CEO knows and lives near. I have reservations, not saying it won't work like.
the views of some supporters are amazing really. I think back to when we appointed Dennis Smith - a manager from York - there would have been a social media breakdown. I honestly believe we need someone who knows their way round to get us out - this was what Dennis Smith had.
