Scotland were robbed, since when do you get a penalty for a knock- on.
Never. Which is why the ref gave one for offside.

But it wasn't offside. Wrong decision, end of. Scrum NOT penalty.
As quoted on BBC.
Referee Craig Joubert was wrong to award a crucial 78th-minute penalty against Scotland in Sunday's World Cup quarter-final defeat by Australia, says World Rugby.
Scotland led 34-32 at Twickenham when Jon Welsh was ruled deliberately offside for playing the ball after a knock-on by a team-mate.
The governing body said that, because Australia's Nick Phipps touched the ball, "the appropriate decision should have been a scrum to Australia for the original knock-on"
Regardless of the decision it was Scotland that lost the game, not the referee. To loose possession in your own half with a 100 or so seconds left is just criminal, they couldn't see the game out and paid the price.
The referee has been well and truly shafted by his peers and governing body as well, he had a split second decision to make and he got it wrong, instead of support him they've just thrown him under the bus.

Why is the Northern Hemisphere so far behind? We certainly lack discipline, are slow on the break down and can't seem to shift the ball fast enough.
Well done Sir, unless Scotland can do something super special then as you predicted it will be an all Southern Hemisphere semi-final.
Didn't see the Irish being trounced by that sort of score (43-20 to Argentina).
