I personally don't think he's anywhere near as good as a lot of people want to believe. If his movement was THAT good he'd surely have returned more than one goal all season. I see a lot of people blaming Hootun or Snodgrass for his failings but nobody seems to want to accept he maybe isn't actually that good after all.

Never known a player fans want to be good as much as he, I put it down to the name personally and if he was called Ricky Smith we'd have never heard of him.

I think Ricky gave up too easily and clearly wasn't mentality resilient enough for us at the time. He was never part of the confidence building rise through the leagues.
He needed far better man management than was on offer.
Tbh I have no idea how good he is. I just remember being impressed early on last season and watched him fade pretty quickly as injury and lack of confidence took effect.
 
If he does return think we may see a more positive RVW than when CH was at the helm with his dull negative defensive tactics. AN is a more positive attacking manager and will want RVW to have more fire in his belly and will get more out of him than CH did.
 
Snoddy was just a poor servant to him and that penno that Snodgrass took and missed that should have been the Wolfs (and had he scored it, given him the confidence he needed) showed where the status quo was. CH failed to man manage the situation, allowing Snodgrass the upper hand. The demise of the youngster was fairly rapid thereafter. I'd welcome a return, and it'd be another feather in AN's cap and respect equally to VwV for a return and showing his maturity in giving it a go.
 
These last two posts are exactly what I mean, loads of excuses blaming his general ****ness with us all on Hootun and (player of the year) Snodgrass without once questioning whether it was actually because he's just not as good as people want him to be. I was never particularly impressed in any games I saw him play, and I wanted him to be as good as everyone else did, but he just didn't look good enough to me, no excuses.

I'll never forget that pass to nobody against Fulham, it was about ten yards in front of me and is one of the very most embarrassing things I've ever seen in a game of football. But I guess that was either Snodgrass or Hootun's fault for "destroying his confidence". Mental resilience is all part of being a top player nowadays, and if he crumbles that quickly and easily then that's further evidence to me that he's not up to Premiership football.

I know a lot of people don't want to accept that, but I'm afraid in my opinion it's the truth - the Dutch and Portuguese leagues are no comparison to the Premiership in terms of overall quality.
 
Munky, I like you and respect you but you've got one hell of a downer on a class player that has suffered at the hands of management and playing staff!

I don't get to every match, but I'm certain I saw him play a lot more than you have Dave, I watched him closely and I'm afraid he just wasn't up to it in my opinion. I just find it lazy to simply keep finding excuses and blaming his terrible goal return last season all on the manager and other players, sorry. Why weren't the very same playing stuff blamed for us being relegated rather that laying all the blame solely on Hootun?

Sounds a bit like people trying to re-write history if you ask me.

I can only repeat that I think you are wrong about him, if he now comes back, gets decent service and scores loads of goals for us in the Prem, I hope you will acknowledge that maybe you were wrong!

Too bloody right I will, don't worry about that skipper, and I'll be as chuffed as anyone as I really want him to do well for us. I just think I'm being a bit more realistic and looking at the actual evidence in front of me more than some are, clearly your good self included in that - but I knew this is just what you'd say anyway so no surprises there <ok>

I believe that the management can be held responsible for his failure. During Hughtons period of manager there was not a single one of our strikers that managed to retain their form from the previous regime. I don't believe that was a coincidence. Our attacking threat was willingly anihilated so we would be defensive, it wasn't by accident and seen as a worthy trade by the management.

Hughton destroyed him along with all our other strikers.

He is a spiritless ****er
 
This is all getting very heated, but I suspect the answer lies somewhere in between. RvW's problems last year weren't all down to Hughton and Snodgrass, but there was a definite crisis of confidence. For me, the best comparison would be with Fernando Torres after he moved to Chelsea - great player, poor results. I do think there is a case for things being different now with options available now that weren't then. St Etienne was a challenge though, and it seems to not have been totally successful. I'd personally be OK with RvW as one of our strikers, but my expectations wouldn't be that high, to be honest.
 
I'm not sure the Torres comparison works a he moved to a more successful team.

I still believe RVW could be a spark that ignites the whole team. I'd be amazed if he ever plays for us again and I suspect he'll end up in the scrapbook alongside Drazen Muzinic. I do hope it does not sour the chance of foreign footballers coming to us if we do go up, they are the life and soul of the Premiership and integral to long term survival.
 
Well, I've got to say, I didn't see anything last season to suggest he is the real deal. Maybe he is, but he looked mediocre to me. To blame our best player (Snodgrass) and Hughton for him being the air kick king is lunacy!
 
I'd also like to see what (if anything) AN could do with Ricky. As others have pointed out, Hughton managed to suck the life out of every single striker he touched while he was here. Someone suggests that Holt is an exception, but even there I think what would have been a gradual decline from his previous heights became a calamitous fall.

Also to repeat what some other people have said, I wish we could have him now as back-up incase Grabban doesn't get fit in time and/or anything happens to Jerome.
 
i still think he is a decent player. he was starved of service when he played for us,and you could almost see the confidence draining out of him. my biggest worry with him would always be the pysical side for which he seems a little lightwieght. he normaly worked hard in games and maybe A,N could be the guy to unlock his undoubted talent
