I'm pretty sure Stalin was a bit of a bit of a racist homophobic dictator too. There's a book I'd recommend on the subject called Liberal Facism, where the author agues very well that the extreme left has historically behaved almost exactly the same as the extreme right.
Pretending to be liberal isn't actually being liberal. Being a dictator automatically removes any prospect of you valuing freedom. Everything that Mugabe stands for is that absolute opposite of liberalism, from his suppression of democracy, to his racism and homophobia. He's utterly right wing. Jonah Goldberg's not exactly a disinterested party, by the way. I haven't read Liberal Fascism, but his comparison of Mussolini and Hilary Clinton seems like a bit of a stretch, at best.
