As it stands football clubs have been relegated by shocking referee decisions before.

I also think that sometimes people like new things just because they are new. Being conservative is the right thing when considering major changes...needs to be tried but not in such a major event (repeating myself there). I do think that VAR will be accepted, but part of that will be because people will forget what football was like and accept constant interruptions. As the song goes, you don't know what you've lost till it's gone...especially if you never knew about it in the first place.

I'm sure there will be occasions when I will be happy with VAR...hey, we could win the WC because of it...though we might have lost in 1966 if it was available then. And possibly our FA Cup win. It needs refining and its use needs to be limited.

Getting to the correct decision/result in sport should be paramount IMO but as you say it needs refining.
 
My argument isn't against correct decisions....after all we could have been relegated because no one spotted that hand ball from Watford...but there are some decisions in football which are purely subjective...do you have three people decide, ten people, a hundred people and go for the majority. Use it in very limited circumstances in a major league, such as the EPL, and go from there. And the first thing is tell the video refs that it isn't all about them...the ref on the field is the most important...are they that certain that they think he needs to know. At the moment, I think they are getting bored and trying to justify themselves.

Torn here. Would quite like to see the Aussies through but don't want Peru to have nothing to cheer.

You shouldn’t confuse goal line technology, which may well have denied us a goal in 1966, but on the other hand awarded us a goal in 2010, with VAR. GT is not subjective, it’s either/or, and is pretty much idiot-proof. VAR on the other hand, is still, apart from offside decisions, completely subjective. It still relies on someone’s opinion, ultimately the referee, and if the referee is incompetent, the decision is likely to be flawed. That’s the problem for me, that the referees need to learn the correct application of VAR, and not just fall back on it for everything.

If they had just used it for offside decisions to start with, and left the more complex things until everyone was used to it, including the ref’s themselves, I’m sure we wouldn’t be having these endless debates.

Oh, and Stokesy was, and always will be, onside!
