Rumours are that use of other people's property (i.e. short pieces of film) used in memes will be outlawed by new legislation going through the EU now. TBH, it has always been a bit shady, but smacks of a touch of misery.guts. I can't see that any harm is done...unless it is used for something unpleasant that could reflect badly on the actors/production.

Silly really, the artists and publishers forget, or are determined not to believe, how these memes and video clips often result in sales. I've spent about £100 on Decemberists stuff since being introduced via our own music thread. It's like they learned nothing from the 90s, Napster and mp3s.
I mentioned something similar in the Politics thread when Imps brought it up. The EU have voted it down so its going to be redrafted, and the way it was written suggests it wasn't meant to be targeted at non profit stuff. but the solutions in it were like smashing a nut with a sledgehammer. If they present it again i hope they put a lot more thought into it.
