Stoute's 2yo not declared for his Thursday debut, which shouldn't be a surprise. There are going to be loads of well-bred 2yos queuing up to run once this weather breaks.

Noticed Charlton's 2yo Garner was taken out of training two weeks after his win in May. Hope he is OK and if OK has not been sold.
 
A rare Thirsk winner for the Queen and a first runner/winner for Richard Hughes at the track. So Candle of Hope is a two times winner, yet still looked a touch green when asked to assert. She's better than this and should at least earn listed Black Type: promising.
 
Hughes, who said: "We couldn’t be more pleased. She wasn’t winning any gallops before she ran and since then she’s done nothing but improve. She’s an angel at home and really easy to deal with. We’ll find a Listed race for her now."

Interesting to hear she wasn't winning gallops early on, yet she was backed late on at Newbury. What is reassuring is that she has improved for her first run. With her breeding and style of running, 8f should be no problem. A race like the Sweet Solera should be within her grasp.
 
Entries are few and far between at the moment, but at last a couple of interesting 2yos are sighted, indeed one entered. As the Queen has so many 2yo fillies this season, it's to be hoped that more than 1 or 2 of them have something about them, but first the entered colt, and that's Stoute's Theme Park. A Lope de Vega colt, he's out of a Dansili mare called Queen's Prize. She was a fairly useful filly who won FTO, and has already bred 3 winners from her first 4 foals. While the first and third were fairly ordinary the second foal, a filly by Siyouni called Award Scheme had some class and won two races, getting some black type when 3rd in the Galtres. Moore is already shown to be riding Theme Park (as he was last week for Circle of Fire, who wasn't declared: Moore rode the winner for Stoute though)..
The filly who has suddenly appeared is Keen Melody, who's by Le Havre out of the good racefilly Set to Music. StM won 5 races as a 3yo and 4yo and her best performance was probably her win in the Galtres Stakes, though she was also 2nd in the Park Hill Stakes. As a broodmare she's so far been disappointing, with her best offspring being Eightsome Reel, who won a couple of races. Keen Melody has been mentioned in dispatches on the gallops and with luck that should mean she will start pretty soon.
But where are the other 2yos?
 
A promising debut from Stoute's unfancied Theme Park yesterday, and that bodes well for the eventual debut of the same trainer's Circle of Fire. This Almanzor could has had two entries (but no declaration) for Newmarket maidens. One presumes the prevailing firm ground has led to him not starting. Sunday he's entered at Leicester, a course which may have more juice in the ground. I'd be surprised if Circle of Fire isn't rated higher than Theme Park.

As I said in one of the opening posts on this thread, the Queen's strength this year is in her 2yo fillies. So far only two have run: the highly promising Candle of Hope and the slightly disappointing Blue Missile. According to me she has 14 more, waiting to make their debuts.
 
I always read the Newmarket gallops reports in the Weekender, mainly to pick up news of 2yos coming along. In this weeks edition there were no gallops reports, which is probably indicative of the difficulties trainers are facing. In fact one day last week, the watered gallop was reported to have been closed.
Hopefully some reports next week and some rain.
 
Circle of Fire made his debut today and ran very green, and appeared likely to finish 5th of the 6 runners. He is a biggish colt and has a lot to learn, but he began to learn in the last half-furlong and kept on well to snatch 3rd. He seemed all at sea when the race quickened 2f out and though Kingscote gave him a gentle introduction, he did give the colt a tap at the distance. If he comes out of this the right way he could be a different horse next time out.

Though he seems a long way from a Derby colt.
 
The leading Royal 2yos, Desert Hero and Candle of Hope, are both pencilled in for races this Saturday. In fact both are entered in for the Denford Stakes, although Desert Hero looks the more likely runner as the Racing Post has Marquand in the saddle, while having Egan to ride Candle of Hope at Newmarket in a good class Nursery (in which she has top-weight). Hopefully the firm ground won't keep them from running.
 
Missed one. Have been talking about the mass of 2yo fillies the Queen has and them not being entered. Well I missed Barrier who is entered on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday. She's an Australia filly out of Fastnet Rock mare, Pure Fantasy. She's a 3rd foal with the other two being the winners Pied Piper and Fresh Fancy. Balding has been fairly successful with his Royal runners but hasn't had a 2yo winner for her this year.
 
Hardly put pen to paper when Saturday's declarations are out and it's all change. Desert Hero is not risked on the firmish ground and Candle of Hope deputises for him. A tough race for the filly as she faces much more experienced colts, including Appleby's Dubawi (who else) colt, Victory Dance who was 2nd in the Superlative Stakes. She gets 5lb but according to ratings needs to improve 12lb more to beat him.
Barrier doesn't go at Doncaster but Charles and Camilla's Pride of the Pack (Beckett) has her 2nd run with Crowley aboard. Did Barrier get out of her way? I doubt it.
 
Two runners today, both with chances. If there was a promising 2yo filly last year it was Mellow Yellow. She ran twice in September, promisingly at Newcastle and then a bravely fought win at Newmarket a couple of weeks. She injured herself after this race but was still entered for a number of big races. Today she reappears at lowly Wolverhampton. If anything like the horse she was last year she should win.
At Newbury Love Affairs makes her 3rd start. After a first run which was better than it first appeared, she was just headed at Newmarket by a newcomer from Haggas's yard (who was thought enough of to then run in the Princess Margaret at Ascot). Looks a ready-made winner but this is a useful maiden.
Neither of these are from the Royal Stud, but are well bred Darley fillies.
 
Group 1 entries are out for the Autumn. Desert Hero is entered in all the main staying races, while Candle of Hope is entered in the Rockfel and the Fillies Mile. No other entries: now that may be for any number of reasons, not good enough or not advanced enough being the main ones. Hopefully it's the latter.
 
A satisfactory comeback for Mellow Yellow, effectively leading all the way to win by a couple of lengths. Admittedly one of the market leaders had their jockey fall off after a couple of furlongs, but I'm sure Haggas was plenty pleased to have her back racing (and winning) .
My guess is she'll go handicapping now, unless a listed race can be found for her..

As expected Love Affairs bit off more than she could chew and finished 3rd.

Interestingly, the dam Yellow Rosebud is by Jeremy, who after his premature death proved to be a more than useful NH sire. But the dam was a more than useful racefilly, winning 4 races including a Group 3.
 
Yep Jeremy progeny tend to like it juicy don’t they? She is a well-built filly and could do really well over obstacles <ok>

No chance. Her ultimate future is as a valuable broodmare in the Royal Paddocks. Meanwhile she has to get some Black Type, and she's entered in G2 Blandford Stakes and the G1 British Champions Fillies and Mares. However given she's missed a year, it could be she lines up as a 4yo.
