When I knew him he was living in Haydock Garth about ten doors away. He was all-right then. He used to get into fights and usually come off second best.. Someone who used to run the fruit and veg shop in North Point and who ended up going down for a long drugs related stretch, sparked him out in Foredyke.... One night Arthur had been in Swallow and came back to his house well pissed, (no change there then), He fancied a pan of chips, put the pan on and went into the living room, laid on the settee and fell asleep. Fifteen minutes later the house was in flames.
Pennine rambler on North bransholme in the 80s was a proper local with some right head the balls but it was a great boozer .
My locals in the day up to '64. Admiral had a bit of a reputation...Hessle lads vs The Barra Lads, as did the Ferry Boat on the Haven (not in my time mind). Does the latter even exist now ? Top House (The George) and Granby (goodlocal bands in the early/mid 60's) were my favorites. https://sites.google.com/site/hesslelocalhistorysociety/hessle-s-history/hessle-in-1879
Tell you some thing TC....There's some right dodgy places in Niagara on the US side of the border. My uncle took a wrong turn on the way to the Rainbow Bridge.. Geez. I've never told anyone to please break the speed limit and get out of here. It was like something from the living dead...
How right you are. It's the same in most US states, particularly major cities, although some of the rural areas are equally intimidating...it's amazing how you can go from total safety to "Deliverance" scenes, just by wandering into the next block. I remember being in Philadelphia on a business trip once, staying in quite a fancy hotel. We wanted to go for a meal in the evening down to the historic old town (touristy) which was only about a mile away. Asked the front desk in the hotel which was the best route to take - "A cab, if you don't want to get mugged" was his answer. **** me !
Same here it was my first pub only 16 that was 1981 lived 5 minutes away . Even when I moved off the estate early 90s still used it as my local
Do you remember the chip van that used to be outside? I was told by one of the lads that ran it, and believed him, that he invented chip spice.
Haha I have seen it been tipped over a few times tho. Not sure about the chip spice not a big fan of the stuff. Not sure about the chip spice not a big fan of the stuff. I have seen the chip van tipped over a few times when a fights broke out in the queue.
New York has some of those areas...One block has big posh cars, gleaming in the sun, Next block, cars are on bricks and its like a scene out of MAD MAX I was once in San Francisco and got chatting to this bird in this bar. I said to her. "I'm going over to Oakland tomorrow." to which she promptly replied. "Don't people who look like you get shot dead in Oakland." I didn't go.
Weird place the US. Was in Rochester, N.Y., for a football tournament, maybe 35 years ago. Two Toronto teams going down in a coach to hook up with 2 Rochester teams. July, 90 degrees plus high humidity for a long weekend. First day - totally ****ed - lost 4 or 5 nil, hard to remember, 'cos we were totally dehydrated. About 30 of us went out in the evening to a local bar..."California Brew House", famous for a mind-boggling selection of beers (mostly Yankee of course, but quite a few European imported bottled stuff, including draft Guiness). Our Rochester hosts refused to join us. Turns out it was also the headquarters of the local biker gang ( Angels ? Can't remember). Brilliant night - fantastic music, lots of raunchy chics ( obviously with the bikers, but they were extremely generous !). You just can't predict what's likely to be the reception. That time it was magic.
After reading through some of the pages on this thread I can see why we were the worthy winner's of The City Of Culture status
