Having a debate at work and need some help.

Hypothetical question . If Rooney moved to another "big" club in the Premiership would he start and who would he replace in number 9 or 10 position?

Tottenham - Kane and Eriksen
Arsenal - Ozil or Giroud
Chelsea - Costa or Hazard
Liverpool - Coutinho or Sturridge
Man City - Aguero or Silva

If you notice, you only mention 1 striker for each club as none of those clubs play with 2 strikers so the question is moot

The biggest club that played with 2 strikers last season was Leicester and Vardy #9 and Rooney #10 would have been tasty - pity Woy never played them for England...

If you guys couldn't figure this out at work during one of your brainstorming sessions, then what do they pay you to do?

I'd say he is probably on par or slightly better than Giroud, thats about it.

My thoughts exactly. It's either a pretty poor wum, based on listing two players from each club the OP believes are better than Rooney, or a genuine question with a lack of football knowledge behind it.

You might as well ask who Rooney would replace for Utd - Zlatan or Martial. He replaces neither of those, as all three play for us at the same time.

The pertinent question is which teams would he have a chance of getting into.

Based on current form he probably not be a certain pick for any team, and arguably isn't for Utd once Pogba is available. But there are still attacking players at other clubs with equally poor form - Sterling, Alli, Giroud and Firmino spring to mind based on the season thus far.

But ultimately Rooney probably wouldn't displace any of those and nor would any of those displace Rooney in the Utd side. Simple fact is there are few players who will be an automatic first choice pick for any top club - managers develop balanced squads and teams which usually won't be massively improved by sticking a random player from another club into the side. Football doesn't work like that <ok>

One game? <laugh> Firmino didn't have a bad game against L'Arse.

Bit harsh to pick on Giroud based on this seasons form, since he has yet to play a minute of football <whistle>

Really looking forward to Friday's game as Pogba must be a certainty to start in front of the home crowd. That leaves JM with the dilemma of whether to play Rooney, or rather, how long to play him before substituting him in order to see the other midfield options at first hand. Were Rooney not the captain, I suspect he would be benched based on current form.

Just read that Rooney has been told that he won't be getting a new deal now - any negotiation will be at the end of the season meaning that he will be playing for the Man Utd future...
