I know what you mean Scully - because of 'stranger danger', our school has a policy that the little darlings are delivered to the school gates by the teachers for handing over to the parents. On Wednesday, one boy from my class was duly handed over to his mother who handed him his scooter and told him to ride it up the middle of the road while she 'had a chat'. He did, and scooted straight into the path of a car coming around a corner - at which the stupid mother started berating the driver. 
I remember walking safely to primary school too - I used to bore my kids with stories of how far I had to walk & they never believed me until I took them there and made them walk it. Eight miles a day - only two miles to school, but I had to go home for lunch every day. Times have certainly changed.
