THE club is saddened to confirm the passing of former QPR goalkeeper Ron Springett.

Springett, 80, passed away on Saturday evening following a short illness.

After signing for QPR as a 17 year-old in February 1953, Springett went on to make 147 appearances in two spells for Rangers.

He also made 33 England appearances, and was a member of England’s triumphant 1966 World Cup squad.

During his career, he also played 384 games for Sheffield Wednesday.

The thoughts of everyone connected with the club are with Ron's family and friends at this sad time.

I lived just around the corner from his sports gear shop on the Uxbridge Road and often chatted to him once he stopped playing. Despite being an England international he had no choice but to earn a living after retiring from football in those days. Nice bloke but when I watched him during that second spell for the club he was already well past his prime. RIP.

Sad news.....as AAARGH said above Ron was a thoroughly decent chap, I used to get my football boots from his shop on the Uxbridge Road. Ron was also a season ticket holder with his family in Ellerslie for many years after he finished playing.

Must still rank as one of the strangest transfers ever when him and Peter swapped clubs in 1967.......

Sad news RIP Ron, yes saw him play & very good, it was strange we swopped them both over after going up.

Such sad news. I remember Peter was the keeper when I first started following the Rs in 66 and then Ron returned the following year. Can't remember whether he was in the team when I saw my first match in 68 but he was renowned as one of the country's finest keepers and we were fortunate to have had him...
