I'll re-phrase, it's not hard Sci-Fi like a Star Trek or something like that. So calling it poor Sci-Fi suggests that she was measuring it against those sorts of books/movies.
Its a poorly written space opera. New Hope also holds a lot of the Space Western themes. I am only comparing it to the sub genre that it fits in, certainly not star trek. Part of the problem is it was written to be a movie rather than being written for the plot and then turned into a movie. There are vastly better space operas with more complex characters, better villains, better universes, better plot twists etc than star wars. The Culture Series, or even The Gap series are far far better examples of the sub genre.
The Rogue One teaser trailer was leaked today from the Star Wars Celebration. The videos are all off youtube that I can find but there are lots of stills from it out. They tweeted the premise for the movie though. please log in to view this image Star WarsVerified account@starwars A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans in Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One #RogueOne.
i never got into sci-fi movies - i liked Red Dwarf because it played about with theoretical possibilities Star Wars is a silly super hero film set on another planet acting out WW2 ( << this is probably the trolliest comment ive ever made )
Well, it certainly takes many influences from the Second World War, the main bulk of the enemies are called Stormtroopers for a start. Silly? Of course it is, most films are silly when you think about it, particularly genres like Sci Fi. Superhero? Yeah, that's a bit ridiculous and trollish. Different subgenre of Sci-Fi from Star Wars. Most probably wouldn't consider it a subgenre of Sci Fi, but personally I do.
I hope you are right. I really think a sith centered Old Republic movie or movies questioning whether the jedi are in fact the good guys would be huge. Seriously I am tired of skywalkers whining and always hitting their targets while the "bad guys" always miss. I want some death and destruction, some villains, and people dying by the bucket loads.
I think we'll be getting that with Rogue One. Director Gareth Edwards came out and said that he was making a war film. He wanted to make a point that the series is called Star WARS.
Jurassic World apparently raked in $204,600,000 (USA) (12 June 2015) for it's opening weekend. Reckon the new Star Wars film will smash that.
Absolutely. I can see it getting close to $300,000,000. The record opening weekend for a film in December is around $90,000,000, it is going to beat that within a few hours of release. I genuinely think, even if it ends up being as crap as the prequels, it will become the highest grossing film of all time. The anticipation is just incredible, literally everyone seems to want to see it. I saw Jurassic World a couple of nights ago, it's actually not that bad. Obviously it isn't as good as the original, but it's a lot better than the other sequels. It's more like a monster movie than anything else.
How does this fit in with the new canon? Because if it is in the new canon then it means that all related material is in the new canon, which means that Revan and Malak are, which means KOTOR 1 and 2 are, which arguably means a whole bunch of stuff is..
In terms of the all the SW games, only the KOTOR series is canon. The main villain in the new film, Kylo Ren, appears to be wearing Revan's mask, which adds to the idea that the Old Republic stuff is canon. With it happening thousands of years before the films, it doesn't have a massive impact on them, it's more like a mythology and legacy. IMO the Old Republic stuff is easily the most interesting part of the entire SW universe.
