Cheers. Did all those books and stuff used to be officially recognised then? I never really counted it as 'proper' Star Wars and barely know any of it, apart from what I've seen online or in video games.

The Star Wars canon is what is officially regarded as "canonical", or officially part of a story, in the Star Wars media franchise.

The official Star Wars canon consists of the six released Star Wars theatrical feature films, along with the Star Wars animated film and television series The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. The upcoming feature film Star Wars: The Force Awakens (along with the untitledEpisode VIII and Episode IX) will also be a part of the official canon.[

On April 25, 2014, Lucasfilm and Disney revised the franchise's canon. They announced that the existing six films and The Clone Warstelevision series are the "immovable objects" of Star Wars storytelling. Previously published material has been relabeled under a "Legends" label, and future content will present a different vision of people, places and events after Return of the Jedi. They also announced that all future Star Wars stories will be connected, with guidance coming from the Star Wars story group. Additionally, it was announced that the films of the sequel trilogy will not follow the same story as that of the Expanded Universe works taking place after the events of Return of the Jedi.[15]

No the first set of plans were stolen and captured piece by piece over years. The bothans stole the 2nd set of plans.

The Bothans were famously credited with stealing the plans to thesecond Death Star during the Battle of Korriban, enabling the Rebel Alliance to destroy the battlestation.

Yea at one point the books, and games were all approved by Lucas Films. It was called the Expanded Universe or EU as it was outside any Lucas Films production. When Disney bought the rights they redefined what was canon to fit their vision for the future of Star Wars meaning a lot of the back story and where things were supposed to go was wiped out.

Surprised those Clone Wars cartoons count as official.

Back to the bothans, I'm sure in the opening scroll on Episode 4 it says something about the plans being stolen during a battle, implying it was stolen in one act.

It says spies, not Bothans so it doesnt exclude the possibility of it being a bounty hunter operation. In the EU it was a long series of operations you can read about them here http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Death_Star_plans

Yeah, I wasn't implying it was Bothan's as we'd established they got the Ep 6 ones, though I appreciate my post looked like that.

I don't get how the EU can have a story where it's a series of operations even though the very first scene of the original Star Wars film says the opposite is true!

Its why the EU was disregarded, it didnt always match up perfectly and it got a little silly with all the kids of the cast from Episode 4-6 anyway as far as I was concerned.

I liked the video games like Knights of the Old Republic which put the whole good vs evil thing in a different light as they make the jedi look bad and the sith look good at times so it sucks they just tossed them all away.

It is. I would really have liked a series of movies focusing on the Sith Warrior storyline from the Old Republic.

I thought I'd found a really tiny bar of chocolate, but it was just a galaxy far, far away.

As if that's your first response <laugh>

Leaks are bad, man. Stay away from them. Somehow so far I have managed to do so with VII, and am glad for it.

Na I like leaks and all the back and forth about it. Its no different than reading a book and then years later they turn it into a movie. It hardly ruins it for me.

So... knowing spoilers to you doesn't ruin a film?

If it was the Empire Strikes Back coming out now, would finding out Vader is Luke's father months in advance through some website not ruin it for you?

Na, it always seemed like a lame plot twist to be honest. Thats the moment that I am supposed to go,,, Eww Ahhhh? I was like uh, what a cop out. Star wars was always poorly written syfy anyway. There are far better syfy stories out there.

I will counter your point with Jar Jar Binks. Wouldnt you have liked to know about Jar Jar before walking into that movie theater, rather than thinking "WTF is this ****? Was someone on crack when they wrote this?"

Star Wars isn't Sci-Fi.. it's a Space Opera. It's a fantasy series set in space.

Space Opera is a subgenre of Science Fiction.

Sci-Fi is quite a big genre, you know.
