Rogers is under a 4 year contract. I believe it will take at least 2 years to make us potential title contenders, but could take more. ATM Rogers is here for years, is that enough for us to get to success. Possibly, but far from certain.
When you are talking via a tainted and imperfect media then you have to be very precise about the message that you are giving. Your 'take' on what was written in the Mirror is perfectly valid but only as far as this piece goes. When put into the context of other statements that he has made (or reported to have made) then the sum total has left some of us with a very different impression. In the modern game, managers have to be craftsmen when it comes to media relationships. It matters not what they think that they have said and what their intention was, it is the impression that they leave that is important. Supporters are not academics who will sift through the minutiae to discover a truth - and neither should they be. Send mixed messages via the media and your audience will become confused as to both your meaning and intention. Hence, both Billy and MITO's advice to only talk when you have something to say.
My "take" I believe is perfectly valid on everything I've read & more importantly heard from BR so far. He has been expected in the absence of real news to do a PR job for the club with the media. Nothing he has said suggests he is going to destroy the traditions of the club or remove the "passion" and replace it with systems. In fact I believe he's guilty of trying too hard to ingratiate himself into our history & culture & might I add been criticised by one these same people for being too cheesy for doing so. This is understandable until he gets football underway. We'd or at least some would complain if nothing was being said at all. He has not committed (as he couldn't yet) himself to anything regarding players. The job was made more difficult in AC's case because he was asked specifically about this player. If he'd said no comment the press would have read it the same way as his real answer & the same press speculation & fan confusion would have resulted. If he'd publicly declared his support for AC only to decide after training with him that he doesn't fit, he would have been accused of being a liar & incompetent. His take on where we sit within the league is a fact displayed in years past not an "opinion" If he's asked where we stand he can't say no comment, or we're ready for the title. He's stated a fact and said he believes he can do something to change it. Wouldn't want a manager who comes in and says make do cough Hodgeson cough. His talk about his systems, well I only believe the one I actually heard from his own mouth which was;" not going to be the Swansea way or the Barca way it's going to be a continuation of the old Liverpool way with him tinkering it with his methodology. Any of the warped versions of this statement regurgitated in the press are not his responsibility. Is he suppose to call a press conference every time they make something up or misquote him? By all means if I've missed something he's actually said that suggests he doesn't rate our club, players or passion please show me to the video or official press release. MITO has been generally negative in his commentary since BR took over so I can only assume he doesn't rate him as a manager. Billy is like me and stated things we don't like that we've heard with the proviso that we understand it might not actually be true. You started off very positive Dave about the structural changes new manager etc but I've noticed you've become a wee bit more negative . What are the specific things you've seen or heard that have made you doubt your original optimism? Not being a smart arse just genuinely interested in case I have in fact missed things.
please log in to view this image Maybe they should remove some of the chairs so they have to sit at the front...
It's all very well to say keep shtum if you've nothing to say, but BR is the front line to the media and doesn't have that luxury. He'd be vilified equally for saying nothing or for being evasive. He has to field questions whether he, or we, like it or not. I'm sure he thinks carefully and tries to put everything in a positive light, but there'll always be those hacks searching for some ambiguity so they can repackage it in a way that will cast doubt. We all should know better than to believe a word they say, but I think we're all looking for evidence to support our own preconceived ideas anyway.
dirtyfrank... for the record.. I have simply had an open mind and formed an opinion only on each activity and item thats come up. I neither rate nor do not rate rodgers. He has taken a huge step up and there is nothing at this point to say he can or can't do it.... I do think he's talking to too many different media types considering he's not even in proper preseason yet and I find some of the stuff like the anfield signs etc a bit of a put on. Hardly something to judge his managerial abilities. I am thus far unimpressed by the carroll "saga" which can only become a sage of our own making now. ................. here's the thing... hodgson came in to groans and then we all proabably said nice guy sound good got joe cole lets back him and the product on the pitch was terrible.... I'm not for going down that road again. Rodgers can talk a good game but he's got to go prove it on the pitch as do 50% of his players what of course he hasn't signed and may not even want. I've not prejudged him but i have judged players based on performance and I know we need more than it seems fsg are willing to give us to deliver what they expect.... Perchance some expressions of my ill feeling on things stems from a lack of any real evidence of them seriously backing their expectations. I'm waiting for august and one week before the first game to deliver a blog on my predicitons for the season ahead generally and specifically on LFC as well... incidentally i've made very clear comments re not believing most of the press and expressing the opinion i beleive the are mashing stuff together to make stories perhaps you've missed those but as i've pointed it out i'll thank you to see I'm not just on a rodgers bashing spree
frank, I don't think that you are a smart arse and never have done. Also it's good to discuss different views. You are right that when Rodgers was appointed I was optimistic. I hailed his statement about developing the Liverpool way and it truly is what I would wish to see. Since then his statements, as they have been reported, have become confusing to the point where my initial confidence is becoming eroded. The debacle over the Carroll issue is a classic example especially when viewed through the filter of the attempt to sign Siguardsson and Borini (both former Rodgers players). For many of us last seasons points tally did not truly reflect the quality of our play. We were far from perfect but I believe that we need evolution and not revolution. The whole club (on and off the pitch) has gone through a traumatic 3 years. It looked as though we were finally making some progress. To be told daily that we will now be undertaking yet another revolution and that the goal we seek is even further off is perhaps just too much to bear. Hence my uncertainty about what is happening and appearing not to happen. I know it may sound silly to some but I truly love this club and have done for well over 50 years. So perhaps I do get a little over-wrought and that clouds my judgement when it comes to Liverpool. Strange as professionally I have often been accused of being too detached when it comes to management decision making. However one thing is certain. No matter if Rodgers is an amazing success or failure; no matter if we are top or bottom of the league, my heart will ALWAYS be with Liverpool. Sorry if this is rambling and incoherent.
I don't agree Saint that just because he may get criticised (and its mild criticism at worst) for saying things people think he maybe shouldn't say that it is because of preconceived ideas necessarilly. I said in my first post on this thread that you can't judge him from what snippets are presented through a rag (and a manc one at that). Fare to say I am more than happy he got the job I wanted him much more than AVB or Martinez the Carroll situation however he should have been more diplomatic with. If he wants to tout him around then do it behind closed doors. If he was being totally misrepresented he could easily put out a statement (by now) to say so. If he did it to put a rocket up the lads arse then again don't use the media for that there are better ways. He should simply have said I haven't had a chance to work with him yet and I will judge him the same as everyone else after I have seen them on the training pitch Simple enough. He is human, he will make mistakes and I fully accept that.
I read most of the article, then came across a caption on the photo of RODgers talking in front of the squad in the media room on the first day at training : "Why's no one sitting at the front? Rodgers clearly has work to do on team confidence." Then I stopped reading.
I'm neither Foredeck. As I've said before, I think Brendan Rogers is a very good prospect, and given time he could develop into a very good Manager, but he didn't lay the foundations at Swansea, he took over a Club prêt à l'emploi, Martinez built it, set the tone and established the style. So you have employed a young inexperienced Manager, to repeat a success he's yet to achieve, on a scale and at a level he's never even operated at. You have a Squad that Mourinho would struggle to get into the Top 4 next year, never mind win the League. The lack of firepower is clear for all to see, well them with their eyes open. My sight, as you have suggested, is anything but short. However LFC Fans' patience is. And I doubt he'll even see this season out.
As usual lots of negative attitude and very very little true analysis. So if your eyes are perfectly OK then it must be your analytical abilities that are failing. Managers come and managers go but there are a few more stressed Premiership managers that are likely to lose their jobs before Rodgers.
Analyse this. Carroll, Suarez and Borini, if you have any other recognised Strikers please let me know, have played 127 Premier League Games between them, and have amassed 35 Goals. So that is a goal every three and a half games, from your entire strikeforce. I'm not being negative. I'm just stating an opinion based on fact.
