Jack Rodwell will not feature against Hull City as Chris Coleman said that he's not been given any indication that the 26-year-old wanted to be a part of his plans.

Rodwell told the Daily Mail earlier this week that despite wanting to leave the club, he is 'fitter than he has ever been' and would play against the Tigers this weekend if necessary.

Amid a midfield injury crisis at the club, he has not played any football since a 1-1 draw in the Checkatrade Trophy against Grimsby last November.

Coleman says he was told by the player that he wanted to leave 'some time ago' and has heard nothing to the contrary since then. The Black Cats boss made it absolutely clear that his priority was working with the club's young talent.

He said: "[Knocks on table]. That's all I need to hear. A knock on my door: 'Yes Jack.'

'Can we have a chat.'

'Yes.'

'I want to play football.'

'If you want to dig in with us, roll your sleeves up.'

"I haven't had that.

"The last conversation I had with him, he didn't want to be here.

"He wants to play somewhere else.

"I can't drag him onto the pitch and say 'please Jack, come and play football for Sunderland,' and I shouldn't have to.

"We're sitting the day before a big game talking about a player that doesn't want to play for the club.

"I'd rather talk about Asoro or Maja, the players who do want to play for the club, and who can help us, inexperienced though they are," he added.

"They are putting themselves up. We might play badly, we might play well, but they are here and they are having a go at it.

"I don't really want to talk about players who don't want to be here and I don't want to have a go at it because that is not going to help us out, although I understand that you have to ask the question.

"I'd rather focus on the players who come and knock on my door and say 'why aren't I playing?'

"I like that. That's what I want.

"I don't want to focus on someone who doesn't want to be here.

"It's not personal between me and him. If he doesn't want to be here, he wants to be somewhere else, that's his prerogative – there's nothing I can do about that.

"All I can do is concentrate on the boys that are here and make sure that we try and squeeze every last ounce out of them and get on with that."

Coleman again insisted that he wanted to work with players who were eager to play for the club as he prepares to send out another threadbare squad on Saturday afternoon.

He said: "That's the type that I want.

"Whether you are talented or not so talented, it's the mentality that I want.

"It's going into situations where you are not guaranteed anything, but you are willing to give everything – even though you might get slapped in the face at the end of it and get no thanks.

"It's those mentalities that you want around you.

"The ones who think 'I'm in a bit of pain, I'm suffering a bit, but we're struggling and I don't want to miss this game'.

"The more of those mentalities you have, and the more situations that you go into with that mentality, the more you get away from where you are.

"Not the one's who look at it and go 'that's not for me, actually. The sun's not shining, we are not 3-0 up, it's not March and I haven't got a big holiday around the corner'.

"We don't want them, we don't want those people."

I'm more & more liking Coleman's stance on this issue.

Getting to love this bloke more and more!!!! I just hope that he won't be dicked about!!!!

Indeed but who's gonna take him?
Surely, even his own team mates hate him.

I know I mean he wasn't much of a tempter when he seemed to be an alright lad but injured all the time. Now Coleman's shown him up he's even less appealing.

There's always some mug out there who will take him for nowt though. We aren't the only ones who make daft signings.

Whoever takes him can shag my **** buddy & I'll even buy the tabs & vodka.
Mind she is in her 50's now.

This whole situation is utterly farcical.

I honestly don't understand how someone can refuse to honour their side of the contract and expect to be paid.

How is that legal and why can't the club refuse to pay him?

I can't do that. Can anyone else on here do that?

Phone the boss, hi, I won't be in today, probably for the next 18 months Or so but keep sticking my salary into the bank. There's a good man!

Disgusting!

Chris Coleman has spoken for the first time about Jack Rodwell's ongoing situation at Sunderland - and revealed that the midfielder doesn't want to play for the club.

The Echo revealed on Monday that the Black Cats offered to tear up his deal over two weeks ago to free up room on the wage bill, but he wouldn't be in line for a pay-out.

In an interview with the Daily Mail this week, Rodwell said that he is prepared to leave Sunderland, but he will not walk away from the last 18-months of his contract.

The former Everton and Manchester City midfielder is on £70,000 a week. He was the only player not to have a 40 per cent pay cut clause inserted into his contract following relegation from the Premier League.

Rodwell has not featured under Chris Coleman, having suffered from a hamstring injury. In the Daily Mail interview, Rodwell also said that he would be available for selection if picked by Coleman.

Coleman was asked about the situation at his press conference at the Academy of Light this morning.

Coleman said: "Jack doesn't want to play for Sunderland. He has told me that, he has told us that, I saw the article. If Jack wants to be somewhere else and he plays every game, I would be happy for him. He is 26, and there is a career there if he wants it.

"The proof is in the pudding. We have to wait and see. He told me that he doesn't want to play at Sunderland, doesn't want to be here. That's that. It won't help me, us, tomorrow, I concentrate on the players we have got and have a crack.

"Your Jack Rodwell's who don't want to be here, they can't help our situation. The other boys who want to be here, they are the ones that will help us."

Lamine Kone and Didier Ndong have also made it clear that they see their futures elsewhere.

How can he not be sacked? If I told my boss that I no longer wanted to work at my company and all that I was going to do is turn up for work, clock on and then doss about doing feck all I'd be shown the door in no time.
The whole thing is a fecking disgrace!!

Not wanting to play for us and refusing are very different thing as far a contracts go. That's why he's declared himself available. To keep his contract.

Surely he has beroken the terms of his contract by not reaching anywhere near the standard expected of him.. The bloke is an absolute leach..

He hasn't though, he's declared himself available for selection publicly. So long as he doesn't refuse to play his contract his safe. He can not want to play to his heart content knowing Coleman won't play him. His agent is playing a blinder making sure he keeps his £££

Yeah true but guaranteed hed just walk about not given a toss not that that makes any difference to how he was when he was actually trying.
Ive never wanted to punch another human being in my life so much. I reckon if i hit him id black out and wake up 2 hours later in a straight jacket on a murder charge. I fecking despise selfish, self centred, greedy pricks like him more than anything in the world!
