Today commemorates the passing of Weatherfield legend Alf Roberts who left this mortal coil on 1 January 1999.

Roberts was the owner of a local business at a time where huge supermarket chains like Bettabuys encroached on his turf. This piqued Roberts' interest in social justice which in turn fuelled a desire to serve the community.

Roberts served as Mayor of Weatherfield, where he developed a love for the RA and Celtic fan football club. He detested incest, racism and sectarianism so held a natural dislike of the former Rangers Football Club. His ever loving wife Audrey commented that It was sad that Roberts did not live long enough to see their demise.

It would have been the source of great pride for him to see his nephew lining out for the sporting wing of the IRA. You will note that his nephew Patrick pays homage to his Uncle Alf every time he enters the field of play, or scores a goal.

In memory of Roberts passing we saw a wonderful display of Roberts passing... Which was only fitting.
