Whatever way you look at it, Ranieri had to be sacked. Wether the players where at fault or not for the breakdown with the manager you can't sack a whole squad of players, even if they where the problem. At the end of the day Leicester where heading in one direction this season under Ranieri and that's the championship.
Last year they had an amazing season, but it's history now, so sentiment shouldn't come into it.
For me I think Leicester had to make a change to give themselves the best chance of staying up. And owners sometimes have to be ruthless and make that change even if it proves unpopular with the fans.
