seems like an exchange that can be negotiated. The situation is like this: The chavs are desperate to get Rooney (Maureen said he was the last piece of the jigsaw). United are not keen to let him go (even if he does want to leave). And we are not desperate to get Mata. So we are in a strong position. If the Chavs give us Mata and £30 million then we could possibly have a deal. Otherwise no deal. What's the downside of a no deal? We have an unhappy player who wishes to leave. The upside? We'll let the Chavs know that they can't have one of our players if we don't him to go. We haven't reinforced a rival for the title. The Glazers will lose some money and the dividends will be lower. That for me is a plus...

Funny that this is exactly how I would feel too as I do not rate Mata that much and we didnt/aren't making a play for him. Either £30m+ and Mata for rooney or no deal. It is not as if we are despearte to sell Rooney to the Chavs or get Mata.
