Exactly. If they finish 1pt above us and they have benefited by more than that from dodgy refs and penalties, then actually the table shows we are better than them! I think there is often a case of making the evidence fit the final standings - but if the final standings are false and created by bad officials etc, then the argument doesn't work. I know I keep going on about this, but why should we keep on blaming Levy etc (when there is plenty of evidence to the contrary) more than officials who have clearly made mistakes that have counted against us?

Penalties given

Chelsea + all Spurs opponents: 14

Spurs + all Chelsea opponents: 1

Possible explanatory theories:

1. The numbers are fair.
2. The refs hate Spurs and/or like Chelsea
3. The owner best known for splashing the cash has gotten ridiculously favorable treatment from referees in the matter of penalties. Not to suggest there could be any connection between splashing the cash and getting favorable football refereeing decisions. We all know that's ridiculous.
4. The material world is the creation of the Demiurge, who delights in seeing evil prosper.

Agree with you District. That's the saving grace for us with Wigan gone,it's one less team to take 3 home points off us as they did a couple of times. They provided a 9-1 thrashing so their tenure in the PL was quite interesting.

All fair points Roo,nothing to add. It's not over yet though is it?

We don't need a miracle, but we do need what looks more and more to be an extremely unlikely event--and, if we get it, to not **** up ourselves.

I've been predicting we'd lose a CL spot on the last kick of the last game for what seems like eons. Next year, I hope that I don't have such an accurate sense of foreboding. Or at least bet my life savings on it.

I'm really not expecting fourth. But I really want us to win.

"Doing better" for Utd means avoiding our nearest challengers doing the double on us.

But for Chelsea (2010) and City (2012) doing the double over us, it would be seven consecutive PL titles. Yes, seven. Forget the number of wins, points, goals- just improve against your rivals.

I think we will win but am not sure of Ars*n*l - sommething tells me they will draw

The question of what is "better" depends on what is "good." What "good" is has been and will be debated for thousands of years (unless we pry the cap off that big can of humanicide, which is looking ever-likelier). However that may be, in this case, Spurs have improved and everyone who disagrees probably roots for Chelsea, Man U or possibly even Arsenal.

If my aunt had balls.

I could just as easily say the same thing for Chelsea and Arsenal both of whom have gifted United several titles.

But I do get your general point

I've probably talked about our lack of penalties on here more than anyone, but the amount that Chelsea have received is probably about right.
They've got a fair number of short, nimble players who like to run into the box at pace, which results in risky challenges.
I'd question the lack of penalties given against them and Man Utd, though. 1 and 0, respectively.
West Ham and QPR have only given away two each though, so I doubt it's a conscious bias thing.

How us and Swansea have managed 74 games between us without being awarded one is beyond me, though.
Both competent in the attack and the counter-attack, both have players who like to shoot from outside the box and both have tricky, pacy attackers.
Wigan are decent going forward too though and they've only had one. Odd.

The Chelsea squad in Amsterdam? Tabloid journalists must be over the bloody moon. They'll have enough material to last for months by this time tomorrow.

This Europa final has shades of Munich last year about it. Benfica spurning chance after chance, Chelsea had very little so far so they'll probably win.

Football is just a microcosm of life...... No matter how hard you work or how much you deserve something out of life, it is generally down to blind luck if you succeed. **** happens to good people. Arseholes can prosper.

I get annoyed when people say that we should support Chelsea as they are an English team representing our country. There is no way will I ever support Chelsea or Arsenal in Europe, I want them to lose every game they play whoever the opposition!
