I struggle to see the signings of Sancho, Van de Beek, Maguire, Fernandes, Bissaka, Bailly, Pogba, Lindelof, Lukaku, Martial, Depay and Shaw as "constantly chasing our tail trying to find a quick fix".
How is signing a stream of young talent or talent approaching its peak a 'quick fix'?
And yes, there have been a fair few bizarre signings mixed in with those such as Fellaini and Fred but none more so than any other club. On paper your transfer business since Fergie left has been: a) significantly more impressive than it ever was under Fergie, and b) significantly more impressive than at least 18 others teams in the PL.
So I'm not entirely sure what United fans are up in arms about, nor can I comprehend the sympathy the club seems to get in the media for being this poor mismanaged statesman.
Of that list of "talent" only Fernandes has been a success - and he hasn't been at his best recently.
For the level Utd aspire to compete none of the others have been good enough; some have looked good at times, but none have consistently delivered.
And there have been a number of short term signings, which have smacked of panic, made in the hope of an instant return - di Maria, Ibrahimovic, Schweinsteiger, Cavani, Falcao and now Ronaldo. None of them bad signings, but all designed to create the impression that Utd are in the market for big star names - albeit that their stars faded a number of years previously.
SAF knew that you couldn't just buy a team of all-stars. He had a definite policy for recruiting players as follows:
1. Big money signings - two at most per season; established but young, who were likely to get better and give the club 7-10 years e.g Rooney, Ferdinand.
2. Players with potential who the club could develop bought for middling fees e.g Evra, Vidic.
3. Youth players - recruit the best young players at a early age, preferably local, and develop them.
Not all signings were a success, but many were - and the key signings were usually spot on, like Schmeichel, Irwin, Cantona, Ferdinand, Evra, Vidic, Keane, Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez, van Nistelrooy, Sheringham, Solskjaer, Cole, Yorke, Bruce, McClair, Pallister, Ince, Valencia, Hernandez, Carrick, van Persie, Young, Berbatov plus all the young players. Some of those were inspired. All of those would get into the current team.
