Replace 'Gareth Bale' with 'Jose Mourinho', 'goals' with 'games' and 'scored' with 'managed well', and it both reads perfectly and makes even more sense.
Jose needs to watch the 2012-13 season, to see how many games
Bale single-handedly won against several of the not "best" teams
in the PL.
Perhaps if (as I contend) he had played Bale in a few more of those
games this season, he would not have unceremoniously got the chop.
Certainly against teams who are more open, giving him space to play (and, just as importantly, not having to do much of that pesky "defending" malarky)
Kevin De Bruyne wins the PFA player of the year award, most City fans would say he wasn't even their best player! How a player who scores the most and assists the most goals does not win at least one of the end of season is beyond me - Kane becomes the first 3 x golden boot winner to not win this award at least once the others won it twice!
