Will this warrant an FA charge for misconduct and subsequent lengthy ban?

Short answer is I don’t know. I assume that as it’s a purely off field matter it’s outside the remit of the FA to act, though I would expect Southgate to drop him from the England squad for a period of time after his comments earlier today. Whether United act remains to be seen.

All this probably hinges on an appeal anyway, I imagine a fair amount of resources will be thrown at this from his side.

Surely this must equate to bringing the game into disrepute and a fine and ban should be applied - though only when all the legal proceedings have been completed as you say an appeal is likely, but this was not the expected outcome today so the appeal is probably not a formality either.

They charged Dele Alli for putting a joke on Twitter, misconduct is misconduct surely.

That didn't stop them with Dele and the covid mask

Apologies Billy the yid ,just saw your post

How many on here would keep their job if they were convicted of assault and bribery?
None. Maguire should be sacked and no other club should touch him if the same logic applied to him. But he might get a few weeks ban at worst

It depends on the circumstances and country, I think.
He was caught, charged and convicted in a few days and he'll pay it off with a fine.
That makes it seem more like he's been caught speeding or something.

Certainly employment law has made it a lot harder for people to be dismissed because of a conviction. But I think assault would pass the test in a footballer's case.

Catona assaulted someone during a game and didn't get dismissed.
You don't sack a multi-million pound asset unless it costs you more than it's worth.
A member of the coaching staff or ground staff would be out on his ear though, of course.

Greek laws seem very odd. You can be arrested for attempted bribery and if found guilty, can...pay a fine instead of doing the sentence!
What makes it hilarious is that, on the one hand, Maguire was playing the "Don't you know who I am?" card to try and get off

On the other hand, the bribe that was offered to make the charges go away was reportedly something between €50 and €200, which is hardly going to cover kicking off with the Greek police because as any 18-30 veteran will tell you, you do not **** with the Greek police
