    "Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

Manchester United's failure to beat Everton this afternoon leaves them on 25 points after 17 games.
That is one point fewer than United had achieved at the same stage last season, when Jose Mourinho was sacked."

And they also had at least qualified for the CL KO stages.

Per Mertesacker would still walk into that Arsenal defence.
    Literally.

    Poor Mr Red Seat.
On the day he chooses to bring his extended family, Arsenal are 0-3 down at half time.

It's the Chinese I feel sorry for, missing this match just because their government is incapable of listening to valid criticism

...soon to be a regular occurrence in this septic isle

Don't think we'll get relegated, but there is a very realistic chance we will finish in the bottom half of the table. Which is absolutely embarrassing whichever way you think about it.

This is far worse than the season Chelsea finished 10th.

I know that it's de rigueur to blame Emery and The Kroenke's but the layer of management between those two has to take a considerable amount of blame.

The squad's dreadful and I don't know that there's a lot that any incoming manager can do to improve results with that set of defensive players. It's worth remembering that you spent nearly £135m this summer and the defence is worse than last season.

    It's time to clear house.

I wonder what the likes of Piskie are thinking over there? I believe they were laying into us at one time this season...…..!

I watched the first half of the West Ham match on Monday and pretty much all of today's match.
It wasn't pretty. The Arsenal defence is non existent with no-one attacking the ball. The midfield tries hard but doesn't look good enough. Half the attack looks uninterested (Ozil and Pepe) and while Aubemeyang and Martinelli look good when they have the ball, they don't do enough when the opponents have it. Leno looks pretty good. I doubt Arteta wants the job after seeing that at close range.
Now watch them go on an unbeaten run.....

A load of their players don't look interested and aren't switched on half the time.

Look at De Bruyne's opener. Kolasinac ducks away from the shot, which is quite ****, but he's not the main one at fault.
The ball goes down the left and Ozil watches his man run in front of him and into space, virtually coming to a standstill.
He gets to the edge of the box and there's not a man within 10 yards of him. He's got all day to pick out the shot.

There are players there that aren't up to standard, but the performance levels they're getting aren't good enough.
I was heavily critical of Lacazette before he joined because of his poor workrate, but he really upped it.
Their response? Dropping him and keeping a load of half-arsed slackers.

The same issues have been there for a dozen years.
You need workrate and commitment to succeed in the PL.
Wenger was successful when he had that hardcore of players (mainly English, but also Vieira and Petit) who epitomised that.
Strangely, he then abandoned it in favour of playing champagne football. He recruited a team of skilful but lightweight foreign players whose weaknesses were exposed by the cut and thrust of the PL. Arsenal don't seem to have grasped that. In fact, they have compounded their problems by recruiting experienced players whose mentality is questionable and are therefore not helping the younger players coming into the team. Luiz, Ozil & Xhaka are not players for a crisis.

Wenger had a team of choppers in defence and a couple of good goalscorers. That's all they needed until they got old together. It works. Ask Liverpool.

It's being reported that Carlo Ancelotti's going to be the next Everton manager.

Is it just me that thinks that this isn't a natural fit?

Since leaving Milan a decade ago, he's not stayed anywhere for more than 2 years. If he can turn Everton round in 2 years, he's the best coach in the world.

Time will tell but I think it’s a brilliant appointment by Everton, he’s been everywhere and done it all
