They say you can't polish a turd..........but it seems Crystal Palace are going to give it a go. They're estimating a spend of £100m to build a new Main Stand, thereby adding 8,000 extra seats. Hopefully, the costings are accurate because doubling that estimate is going to make this a very expensive exercise given that they're already burning money on wages with Benteke, Cabaye, Sakho and Zaha on our top wage or more. If Roy can't keep them up, this is not going to happen soon.

It actually looks pretty nice and doesn't seem to contain too much Executive Box-iness. It's a shame that it's situated in the arse end of a ropey old South London Sainsbury's car park and is opposite the very tired Arthur Waite stand and adjacent the Whitehorse Lane End, the worst end in the Premier League. I recall when there was a proper away end there and the ground held 52,000. It didn't hold 52,000 too often, but that's Palace for you. Hopefully, they can address the other two stands soon but the supermarket and houses in Park Road make that a real problem.

On the one hand the issue for Palace is that, if they want to expand their stadium, they'd have to move from Selhurst Park as they're hemmed in there.

On the other there's so many empty buildings in central Croydon they could probably plonk a new stadium as close to East Croydon as Selhurst Park is to Norwood Junction without too much bother.

That is the problem. I know someone who lives on Park Road, just behind the Arthur Waite and it's a narrow road, with little room for parking, very little by way of pavement and then the football ground. Those houses used to be Council owned but they've all been sold off long since and wouldn't be cheap to buy up. Whether the Council would support the idea of knocking them down, I wouldn't know now. A few years back the football club and Council weren't on very good terms but that seems to have improved.

Like most inner city clubs relocation is probably the better option for the club, but fans are the problem. We tend to be a bit sentimental and miss places like the jerk chicken shack on Whitehorse Road. Mmmmmmm.

In its time it was a good ground. When they had the Whitehorse as an away end it was a good place to go as an away supporter. I was in there in '77 when we spent a season in the second division.

When that stand got sold off, problems started. I recall being put in the top corner of the old Holmesdale Road Stand in 1980 for the 4-3 midweek game [bloody good game as well but a ****ty view and it always seemed to be way too full for safe standing] and until they redeveloped that end and put away fans in different bits of the Arthur Waite.

I recall being there in 1993 or thereabouts, Andy Gray scored a couple for us against them in a 3-1 win. That was really hairy. I took Mrs B. She didn't like it much as the local constabulary were a bit too 'on edge' and a generally good humoured away support had its patience stretched.

I though Citeh showed exactly how to beat a parked bus and many teams including us could learn from that. Keep your strikers onside but with the back line, even if it is on the 6 yard line and then chip over the top to them. Fair play to them.
 
How sherry became so called is a nice story of two language twists. Coming from the Spanish town of Jerez which is pronounced in Spain Hereth. The French catch on to the drink and naturally pronounce the name as if it's a French word Jerey then the British Tommies in France in the first world war discover the drink and pronounce the French mispronunciation in a British way Sherry. We then proceed to drink more of it than anybody else so the Spanish are happy to concede the name and collect the revenue <laugh>

I can't remember what ban he got but it definitely wasn't in the Paulo DiCanio envelope.

The Brits, as was their usual habit in the past soon moved in to buy some of the vineyard and bodegas. That was only after they had tried to invade Cadiz in the 17th century and failed. Eventually cheap knock off versions were being produced in British colonies in Australia and Cyprus etc.
The Brits are the largest consumers of sherry in the world, which is a bit of a surprise because it is European.:emoticon-0102-bigsm

Thanks for that recall. I remember Hillaire getting sent off and Hoddle was involved in that incident as well I think....
Just a stunning game of football - and some of Spurs passing was breathtaking that night! <cheers>
 
I can remember going to Palace to watch newcomers to the league Peterborough....seems like years ago (I guess it was!).I think it finished 4-3 to Peterborough.Damned good game though. Ground was absolutely jammed solid. I stood beneath the main stand.Probably still got the programme...I'm a notorious hoarder!

I've still got some Spurs programmes from the season that wasn't 1939-40.......and one of a team called Thames with Jimmy Dimmock at outside left,but that's another story.....

Chelsea finish 2nd in their group and, unless Liverpool manage a severe cock-up tomorrow, can apparently now only face one of Barca, PSG or Besiktas in the next round.

I'm already practicing my surprised face for when the turkish side is picked 'at random' from the bowl, smelling suspiciously of bacon grease. Oldest trick in the book.

Someone predicting worst snow in Hertfordshire and surrounding areas in 27 years. Signs of 1962/3? Thank goodness we are out of the PL chase!!!!~~!?
