Was just typing saints look a decent team considering, Clyne and Bertrand are quality full backs and overall they aren't that far off the team of last season in terms of quality. They just need two of the summer signings to be big hits and they can have a decent season.
Liverpool take the lead against the run of play. Ward-Prowse looks a top talent, he broke into their side last year and has a wicked delivery on him.
Saints unlucky to lose against Liverpool. You have to give credit to Saints for being able to continue to bring through high quality players. Conversely, a sobering game for Liverpool. They only got three points at home against one of most people's relegation candidates thanks to an incredibly easy header pushed wide late.
That shot from Davis directly at the keeper was unbelievably bad. He had all day to pick his spot and then does that. Encouraging performance overall from Southampton, though. Mignolet pulled off a couple of important saves today, but he looked very, very suspect on deliveries into the box, especially on set-pieces. No real pressure on his place, either. Not ideal.
Yeah, Bertrand's reputation has dropped massively but from his performance today he looks a good signing. Clyne was excellent but we all knew he was quality(except Hodgson). Southampton should've won it and they were unlucky to lose. Impressive stuff considering they had to throw in so many new players today.
No offence to Southampton, but I was surprised that a bigger side didn't go in for Clyne when he was out of contract at Palace. He was linked with Man Utd and it's easy to see why, given their apparent lack of depth and quality at the back. Young, English, talented, quite a number of senior games under his belt, capped at U19 and U21 for his country, available for virtually nothing... bit of a no-brainer.
I'll admit I never knew much about Clyne when at Palace but shrewd piece of business to get him on a free. Nothing fancy (apart from when he scores) just a good quality full back who does the basics well. You could argue he is a better defender then Shaw.
When you see Smalling getting picked you realise playing for England isn't about ability as if it was then Clyne would have been called up last season.
Newcastle had a good go at City and that goal from Aguero's a kick in the teeth. The Geordies seem to have made some decent signings this summer, so they might buy Pardew a little slack.
The 2013-14 top 6 will just want to get to the group stages of the UEFA tournaments without already starting to lag behind the PL top 4 at that moment.
The saints played some lovely stuff. Some of their new lads looked decent too. The scouse got very lucky.
I was hoping for a Geordie win against City because Newcastle is a tough place to go and City winning there is a sign of things to come. I think all supporters of all teams think that their team can improve after a disappointing sort of start to the season and we are no different in that respect. Saints hit the woodwork so Liverpool had better be careful. I'm hoping for a banana skin at Burnley tomorrow.
Saints are for the drop, this season. It's the fact that they were so bad that made 'Pool look not quite as bad as they really are. I've predicted that Mousers are in for a massive shock this season. That's one of the reasons why I think Rodgers could be facing an early exit from Klanfield.
Worst decision of the weekend? Boro's disallowed goal against Leeds. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04fhhd2/the-football-league-show-20142015-16082014/t?=14m11s High foot? Nice deflected goal by MiniBale, though: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04fhhd2/the-football-league-show-20142015-16082014/t?=47m41s He was almost instantly subbed off though, for some reason.
Its an overhead kick ffs!! He had every right to go for that ball, unless he actually kicked the guy in the head, that goal should have stood. BS decision
Marney starts tonight, thought he'd retired but I checked and he's only 30! Was it 2 or 3 he got against Everton?
