as ou say, he "made himsefl big" by spreading his arms, if his arms weren`t out the ball wouldn`t have hit it. If a defender "makes himself big" in the area i bet you would want a penalty

Weird, when we got a pen against City in the league cup semi-final because it deflected off a knee onto an outstretched arm everyone screamed it can't be given if it deflects from such a close distance
